Wii U did 13.6 million in five years, and the Switch has done 10 million in 10 months.

Think they sold 70 million 3DS and 2DS though.

Reckon they will hit big numbers for the Switch regardless though. The product works, the catalogue is good, the hype is big. They can hit the casuals with crap like Switch Fit and Switch Sports down the line.

Stupid question for shit people (me):

Can I charge the mobile unit with the cable, or does it need to be in its dock?

Took my Switch away with me this weekend and ran the battery down (worked perfectly, just lasted until I was done anyway), but would like to be able to just take a lead somewhere with me to charge it rather than the whole charade.

Cheers.

You can charge it with any usb type c cable without dock.

(including the cable that comes with it)

In fact, would recommend having it plugged in when playing handheld at home, as it’s better for the longevity of the battery

Yeah i have it pligged in in handheld at home. That way i can mindlessly drain hours.

Not bad at all. 3DS did 11 million or so in its first year and it launched in Japan in Feb and USA/Europe in March.

The key thing is the switch is selling in Japan. A market where consoles are dying and portables are thriving.

Very niche so unlikely to be relevant but it doesn’t actually work with the OnePlus Dash charger cable/plug despite it seeming like it should as it’s just USB C

It did that well in the end in the first year? I remember it was having a rotten time initially, so they did that early price cut and giving away emulated games thing. Always thought it took longer to take off in the end.

This is probably the key factor in the big Japanese devs going all in on Switch now.

Yeah the price slash saved the system.

Yup. Which is awesome as Japanese games are a completely different flavour and gives nice variety

(I actually bought mid price slash - someone online cut their price early, so I got a cheaper unit AND the 20 free games)

Nice, thanks. Same as my phone and laptop then.

Came to put this. Just assumed my phone charger would work as they are both usb-c. No zelda on the plane home.

This summarises (about as well as is possible - i.e. not very) how well different chargers work. (Click to vew full size). There’s obviously a little bit of variation based on individual transformer/cable quality as well.

Handy that. My phone charger does ‘rapid charging’. Will that blow my Switch to fuckery if I use it, or will it in fact be a good thing, adding goodness to the experience?
