For those who don’t know what Xenoblade is, it’s a big JRPG that came out near the end of the Wii’s life.
It was a cult hit after a campaign to get it released in the West was eventually successful.
It was popular for a lot of innovative ideas at the time. Combat was all real time and 3D, one of the first to not be turn based. It also had vast landscapes that never loaded and had insane draw distance. It married that to an incredible soundtrack designed to loop endlessly. It modernised fast travel, skill trees and quests that completed without you needing to return to the giver. You’ll wander through areas with monsters in 50 levels above you, so you knew you could return in the end game. It also reminded a lot of people of FF7, where it was blatantly an epic Japanese game but had a distinctly western vibe, here re-enforced by the voiceover being by a cast of unusual British regional accents.
The game takes place on two warring, mammoth titans and the landscape sometimes changes as they move around. To beat it, it’s probably 70 hours. I think I took over 90 as I kept being distracted by side missions and gorgeous scenery.
I’ve no idea if it’s held up, but the team who made this heavily inspired BOTWs approach to world building and indeed helped with the landscape design itself.
If it’s £20, I’ll be buying it again for sure. If it’s £40-50, I won’t be.
