what time does the Thursday sale kick off? Which time zone? I’m stupidly up for this as it’s the only kind of shopping I’ll be doing for days.

Usually in the mid afternoon and they will have something called European Download on here

Which will have the details.

It is usually fairly shite though…

Yeah absolutely. £25 & postage?

Have to factor in that plenty of people owned a Wii and a 3DS/2DS. To really be living up to those numbers the Switch would have to not just be hitting the Wii sales, but the combined sales of both. Still, they really did look a bit fucked around the time of the Wii U, so it’s a strong recovery.

I’d argue the switch is already more successful tha the wii due to the drastic increase in software attachment rate

Could be right, plenty of people just had a Wii as a novelty and never really went beyond Wii Sports. Possibly the case that most people with a DS just bought an edition of Pokemon or two too. They’re flogging massive numbers of titles like Luigi’s Mansion and Animal Crossing, and I’m not sure that’s ever been the case before.

Also this is the first time in generations that 3rd party titles are selling well on a Nintendo platform

So here’s a thing…

The Wii attach rate ended up at about 9.2, the Switch’s is about 6 (as of Dec 31st)

Obviously we’re mid cycle at the moment and the Switch’s will likely only go up, but the Wii didn’t do as badly as people thought in terms of software sold per console

The Nintendo Switch’s software attach rate is higher than the Wii’s, and it’s seen a significant rise in sales per hardware unit year by year, Nintendo reported on Thursday.

Cumulative sales per hardware unit for the Nintendo Switch reached 55,000 yen in its third fiscal year. The Nintendo Wii reached 42,100 yen in its third fiscal year, for comparison. Those figures include hardware and software sales, sales of accessories like Joy-Con controllers and the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, sales of titles from other software publishers physically manufactured by Nintendo on commission, add-on content sold digitally, and Nintendo Switch Online revenue.

Nintendo is basing its claims off of a different metric than the one traditionally used by video game publishers. Conventionally, they calculate the attach rate of software per unit of hardware by dividing the number of software units sold by the number of hardware units sold. But, Nintendo said that method no longer adequately reflects the state of its business because of the rapid growth of digital sales, which includes indie titles with differing price points and add-on content that can’t be counted with the number of software units sold.

Makes sense. Disappointing that they don’t publish the necessary figures to calculate their new attach rate as obviously as they did the old.

Switch isn’t a wii though it’s a wii and a ds. Wonder if overall Nintendo are doing much better than the 3ds & wiiu years

Reckon the ds was more popular but people didn’t really have twitter and the pace of the internet was slower back then so the perception now is of the switch being a more dominant cultural force

Nintendo DS sold 154 million units and is the 2nd best selling console ever. I’d say Nintendo are deffo doing better than the 3DS and wiiU years. Thats reflective in software sales alone.

The hits on Switch are hitting more frequently than both those console and generally pulling larger numbers

Can’t remember what came out on the 3ds really, seemed to have a surprisingly long life though

Just thought I’d check out to see if my intense paranoia was justified and it would appear the only Switches can now be sourced exclusively on Ebay.

And that’s only the Swtich Lite.

Loved my 3DS. Some excellent Zelda, Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing, Mario and Picross games (3D Picross too, that was ace). Load of JRPGs and indie stuff too (Shovel Knight, Steamworld games etc.). Bloody good Metroid game too (Samus Returns).

Mario Kart 9/Ultimate

Seems very little point in releasing a new MK game on the system, even though it would be the first not to have one. In all honesty, it seems the perfect excuse to skip a generation on a series that’s a little stale. Sales of lesser/spinoff titles suggest a Diddy Kong Racing game could be a hit if they’re going to make another racing game.

Then again plenty of people buy an updated FIFA/COD whatever game every year, so perhaps they’ll just put a twist on MK and sell a shitload more copies of it.

There was a leaked rumour last year the big game for Christmas would be Mario Kart 9. And a lot of Nintendo focussed podcasts think the next incarnation will be more of a Smash Ultimate / Fortnite, ‘always on’ platform, with every past character, track, mode etc included. Then there’ll be in game events, DLC etc to keep you tied into an ecosystem for years to come.

I know it’s still selling but I think there’s enough people now who are done with it or who last rinsed it 2 years back to warrant a new version.

As long as there’s an option where you can just play an updated version of Double Dash online with your pals, I’ll be happy.
