I find no value in soap operas, the nadir of dramatised fiction for me:

  • Mainly depressing
  • No escapism, just the hell of the same awful life I’m already living
  • Story written for no ending, they’re like the Rogue/Nethack of TV but without the minimal interaction.

So I don’t watch them. They’re all the same.

Seriously though, for me I find almost the exact opposite of the three points you made (depending on the soap)
Neighbours might be generally mundane but more entertaining than depressing
What more escapism could you want than bouncer’s dream or Harold losing his memory
And endings happen all the time, you just get to see what happens after the ending too.

I mean, you don’t like them and that’s fine, but you can’t come into a Neighbours thread and throw Alf Stewart’s name around like that, you dag

Mate it’s @profk you need to have words with. He dragged me in here for reasons best known to himself despite the fact he should have already known my feelings.

(I have been subjected to episodes of all these shows which is why I know they’re pure shit. I also stop watching shows that turn soap opera, eg ER which went full soap opera post Carter and Lucy getting stabbed. Before that it was often lighthearted and off kilter and fun.)
