Me three. Can’t wait for her show tomorrow!
Half man half biscuit - No one cares about your creative hub so get your fuckin hedge cut.
Terminus is the best lyric of the year, possibly the century. The whole thing is outstanding, if you enjoy listening to men from the wirral with very specific grievances about quiz shows and rock climbing. Cant recommend enough.
Holy Fawn - Death Spells
Someone on DIS recommended it and I’ve been playing it ever since. Shoegaze, Post-Metal and Dream Pop all rolled into one. It really is brilliant.
Deffo for Skee Mask. Probably my most listened to album of the year
Would’ve chosen this, but figured enough people know about her, so went for a lesser known album.
TBF, Tomberlin, Sun June or Lucy Dacus could be my AOTY easily.
If you like metal/noise…
Technically a re-release, but I think the added track really makes it. At least my favourite heavy record, if not my favourite of any genre. I really hope she plays the UK on her upcoming tour.
Profligate - Somewhere Else.
This was my first favourite album of 2018 way back around Jan/Feb, and it has stayed with me. Stripped back blackened synthpop with lashings of cracked hissing noise fizzing over it. Pitchfork summed it up nicely: “The result is a quietly commanding darkwave record that blends ripped and lustrous textures, conjuring visions of Coil covering Cold Cave or Prurient doused in Depeche Mode.”
Haley Heynderickx, all day every day
So so special
Loma - Loma
A collaboration between Cross Record (who released last year’s excellent Wabi Sabi) and Shearwater - a blend of sparse electronic laments and occasional desert blues, punctuated mid-album by the propulsive Curve-esque Relay Runner (below):

IRISIRI by Eartheater
A real eclectic mix of sounds and styles and a fascinating contrast of textures. Amazing vocal performance throughout too. Wonderful album. So glad I stumbled across this gem.
Firmly becoming one of my AOTY! Softy rapped world weary lyrics, minimalist beats and a record to get lost in with something new to find with each listen. Utterly absorbing.
Dead jealous that you got to catch him live especially with Open Mike Eagle!
Rolo Tomassi, Time will die and love will bury it.
It another step up by one of England’s most unsung bands. Just sounds like no one else at this point. If you like heavy music you should be checking this out.
Leon Vynehall - Nothing Is Still
The concept sounded slightly wanky but he nailed this, imo. A sweeping, jazzy, smoky, rich delight of a record.
Oooh, that sounds good. I’m going to have a go on that.
Yup, this album is excellent.
Saba - Care For Me
A wonderful hip hop album as an extended meditation on mortality and loss
