Sure, either be honest or break up.
…but then Kim left Pixies entirely.

Some bands stink now but I think the 2020s have been a golden age of older bands releasing top tier albums.
The Smashing Pumpkins, Mogwai, Blonde Redhead, City of Caterpillar, Feeder, Planes Mistaken for Stars, The Afghan Whigs, Alkaline Trio, Yo La Tengo, etc.
It’s nice.
They should go on sabbatical
What about Motley Crue breaking up and doing that stupid contract thing and then a few years later breaking it so they fart through their shitty songs out again?
To be fair to Crue I think they’ve only done this three times maximum, whereas the Who have 903 times
Some bands should’ve just broken up before they even got going tbh. The prime examples being Viva Brother and Radiohead
What a post.
Bands should do what they want, you don’t have to listen to them if they go rubbish
Bands should set unambiguous, quantifiable OKRs for each financial quarter which are a little stretch in terms of ambition, but not to the extent where they lose faith in the process during the retrospective at each planning event.
Beats getting an office job I guess
In the spirit of the season, Fugazi went on indefinite hiatus so that no other band would ever need to split up again.
People love Silent Alarm but instead of their shows getting crowds flocking in, Bloc Party are playing it at stuff like Kendall Calling with The Twang and Barry off Eastenders doing karaoke. Probably because they never split and kept churning out turgid albums after
Half these bands broke up at some point, proves my point
I’ll still make the case for A Weekend In The City.
That’s just the curse of the mid range British indie band. Bombay Bicycle Club and Maccabees both broke up and are doing the same.
Silent Alarm was a bigger deal than both those bands put together I reckon
yet some of you poured £250+ to see Oasis in 2025
Interesting* philosophical side-question to this is whether announcing you’re going on a hiatus/taking some time apart/pursuing side-projects is the same as announcing that you’ve split up. I think there is a difference, and have a lot more sympathy with bands who do that and then get back together again rather than making a big deal about splitting up. Bombay Bicycle Club just said they were taking a break for a bit whereas Maccabees made a big deal of breaking up and then got back together.
*Sort of got bored with this point, not sure it is interesting
Announcing you’re breaking up vs announcing you’re going on a hiatus/taking some time apart/pursuing side-projects
- The same
- Not the same
- Interesting side question
- Not an interesting side question
