Because on the face of it, if we were alien observers or something, we’d look at our vicious ignorance and probably go “nah, fuck em, made their beds”. And if we actually want to change such a cataclysmic phenomenon in any way we probably need to stop doing things as we have been in every regard.

Why do you think an observing alien would assume humans are the dominant lifeform?

There’s more bacteria than us (both in numbers and biomass). They inhabit more environments than us - including inside us. And they’re pretty good at killing us.
