right fine

(safety wink)

(no problem, we’re all good)

It’s not a simple fact, it’s a complicated issue reduced to a slogan. When do you get to step 2?

No one has done that though

Probably five minutes behind again here

Seen so many people of varying weights opening up about how this poster has triggered awful feelings about themselves because it’s so poorly executed, including relaying it straight to CRUK, just an absolute error of a campaign

In this case I’m sure you’re right but just because there’s a vocal backlash to something doesn’t automatically invalidate it. If the BBC made commissioning decisions based on the people who vocally complained about its programmes it wouldn’t make very much.

This comment seems eminently sensible to me.

Based on my own experience (and a bit of reading) rather than any research:
evidence suggest that obesity contributes to illness and early death
cancer risk increases with obesity
one of the aims (the only aim?) of CRUK is to reduce/cure cancer so they produce campaigns like this to help raise awareness

The more people know about this risk, the more chance there is to lower cancer cases.

yeah life’d be a box of fluffy ducks if it were that simple but it’s obviously not

Can it be reasonable for educational purposes AND ineffective? I think I’d vote for that option.

Although, 368 posts later, I’m still not entirely convinced by either argument.

being ineffective probably means it’s unreasonable for education, jook.
just a better poster would’ve done the job

You were the one who said with these kinds of things in general!

(No need to argue here bud, I think we agree with each other).

Not in all cases; agreed.

I guess it’s about percentages: if the campaign makes enough of an impression with a group of people then it has done its job.

The fact that we are arguing about it here, and elsewhere suggests that it has

wrong ones?

What? No it doesn’t.

My experience of this is that it’s made a lot of noise for all the wrong reasons and caused a lot of distress and hardship, and amongst the target audience. The fact is obese people know obesity is an acute health risk.
This poster does nothing to change their circumstance or their behaviour and adds very little education, in fact, none at all.

here’s some pointless anecdotal evidence for you:

I told my my mum recently I was worried that her weight was going to give her problems and suggested some exercise she could try and she’s doing really well with it now and has lost some weight and seems to be doing better mentally as well.

So there’s at least one occasion where scaring someone a bit has helped them.
