Just watched RELIC as part of the LFF. It’s OK, but borrows quite heavily in parts from House of Leaves

Saw this tonight as well. I think come awards season Moss is going to be in about it on the back of this, but Decker the real MVP for me. Just seamlessly dreamy for something with so much going on. Will defo reward a second viewing

Kermode loved Saint Maud. Just sayin like.

Wouldn’t read too much into that, he’s a right knob.

Yeah but is it as good as 90s horror film The Relic

Having slept on it overnight, I’d say it is not very good at all. It’s effectively creepy at times, but the internal logic of film doesn’t hang together. Contradictory things that don’t make sense are never resolved.

This is great to hear! I did a Q&A with Decker when she came to the UK with her first two films and she was super lovely, and such an obvious talent. Each film has been an improvement on the last so I can’t wait to see Shirley.

You can guess what films Kermode is going to like every time

Yeah I agree, saw it a while ago. Underwhelming

Need need need need need to see this

He has like 20 years of publicly available opinions, I’d be surprised if he/anyone in that position was able to still shock people with their views

Absolutely. I now know his views and likes as well as anyone else who I have listened to for a very long time. Nothing wrong with that, although it can be sometimes funny when he defends the indefensible because it’s a film connected to one of his favourites. Such as when he was aggressively promoting ‘Transcendence’ because it was directed by Wally Pfister.

Transcendence is the one film I have tried to watch more than once and couldn’t do it

Don’t agree with the Funny Games comparison at all

I really liked Saint Maud, esp as a big fan of the old lingering unease, the occasionally sprinkler dark humour, and the characters faced with profound alienation in an otherwise fairly mundane world (it reminded me of Personal Shopper a little bit in that respect, but I prefer this)

Saint Maud around my neck
She never gets respect

Last few I watched

Unsane - the plot is wafer thin but like Side Effects, its an entertaining B movie. The way its shot works surprisingly well and adds a more twisted edge

Home (2008) - loved this, thought the story worked really well and played out surprisingly believably. Very strange amount of nudity thougg

Stretch - hated this. Smug as fuck

I liked Saint Maud but kind of feel like it didn’t quite hang together as a whole

I think the concept is pretty original and has lots of potential. I’m not sure if the religious background was really fleshed out though

Central performance was great. Weirdly I felt it worked better as a portrait of loneliness ala Morvern Callar than typical horror movie

Strange to hear ESG in a sullen British horror movie too
