I keep wondering if there could be something that sticks, but all the evidence so far shows that no one really gives a shit. Affairs, domestics, misuse of funds, secret children, ha ha that’s Boris, what’s he like! I’m sure some people will raise their eyebrows and be a little bit more reluctant to put an X in the Tory box, but there’s a swathe of people who just find it entertaining and endearing, because he moves through the world with the confidence and shit-eating smoothness that they desperately wish they had (which is also common with Trump fans).

Hey, still coalition possibilities there and a lack of outright majority! Good campaign will move those lines

No one likes entrepreneurs, even other entrepreneurs.

Ah, but they envy and respect them, and see them as aspirational models. Ah.

The second ah is because idk why I put the first one, and I wanted to make it into a thing

I do beg your pardon, I think it’s actually Tiny who he looks like

Not sure if this has been posted already, but the John Oliver Show made a compilation for all you Bercow fans:

I think the only time I thought being a entrepreneur was cool was when I was 11 and trying to sell sweets and pop at school

Agreed. All I’m saying is that I think a lot of that tolerance of Johnson’s flaws relies on not looking directly at him all that often. ‘Johnson’s a rotter’ is obviously not news at this point but a ‘Johnson is Prime Ministerial material’ campaign might yet be a bridge to far. Especially if he can be lured off the path laid out by his handlers and the softball Tory press.

Is that an apprentice thing?

Although to an extent, Johnson is ‘priced in,’ it’s still noticeable how little people have seen of him. Between him, his team and the press, the public have a very filtered view of Johnson’s public appearances and his attitude to any scrutiny.

While I don’t expect that to change a great deal, I do think that there is still a significant prospect of him letting the mask slip with a member of the public, and if that happens with a brexiteer, it could go wrong for him.

It’s Tommy, the cockney wheeler dealer (he sells pillows in a market) who will hopefully win this series.

Weird to think that his team must be actively trying to reduce his exposure to the public because of this and yet I don’t believe for a moment he thinks he’s anything less than a titan of public mastery

Going places and blithely chuckling or blustering through one blistering dressing-down after another seems to be a big part of Johnson’s broader gambit. The more that politics seems like a cringe-intensive bit of mockumentary television comedy, the easier it is to countenance a main character who is so obviously clownish and out of his depth.

I think the best line of attack on Johnson is that he can’t be trusted on Brexit. I’ve been goading a Brexiteer I know with that line for a few weeks now, they are getting proper irked. He had a majority for a deal - and then pulled it. Why? Because he cares more about his own career than he does about Brexit. And he wrote two letters before the referendum, always remember that. He’s never been a hardened Brexiteer. That sort of thing. That’s what will make people defect to the Brexit Party, which is what the Tories most fear.

I still think it’s astonishing that there is no definitive answer to the question “How many children does the prime minister have?”, would be nice to see that get a bit of traction but i doubt it will.

This is the major difference with May. In both cases the party machine is trying to manage the candidates exposure as effectively as possible, but May was always on board with the plan to shield her whereas it is surely going to chafe at Johnson sooner rather than later.

Absolutely - he’s temperamentally ill-suited to election campaigning, but I wonder how this particular scenario could play out. If it does, it would be great fun for sure.

Much as I loathe him, I don’t agree with this.

Here’s hoping

This is the kind of thing that is already factored in imo. If you like him, you don’t care, it’s a privacy issue. If you don’t like him, well, add it to the list. I don’t think there’s a big chunk of people who will shift their votes based on things like this.
