yeah fair, I think we basically agree

Totally agree. I am from a middle-class background, but one which sort of failed quite hard in a lot of ways (family money drama basically) and I did work as a musician for a few years and did okay, but I am still paying off a just-under-five-figure debt as a result and it’s neutered my career chances in other fields quite badly. I knew a lot of people in that world who came from incredibly comfortable backgrounds who were able to just butt around because they knew they had that to fall back on (also a few people who did not have that and worked incredibly hard)

In my youth you could quite happily live on the dole plus housing benefit and be a musician, writer, actor, whatever. Maybe not comfortably for more than a couple of years, but it was in effect an arts subsidy from the government.

It was a fairly common path, and lots of people would try it for a couple of years to see if they could get anywhere. Hence the large number of working class bands, actors, writers etc in the 70s, 80s and early 90s.

Just want to say that I think there is a specific issue with US TV (that we see/that is popular) ignoring working class concerns or people struggling, whereas UK TV has generally felt like its definitely shown poor people struggling. I mean stuff like Only Fools and Horses I think feels quite accurate about stuff. I remember enjoying Dear John back in the 80s and one of the things I appreciated was how much he lived in the sort of situation my mum and my dad both did.

(Kind of a side point to this: If you watch all of Luther it’s interesting how in 2nd series he lives in this very very apt council block flat, that’s pretty grotty and bland. In the first series he’s in this crazy expensive loft place and then later in other series he has this incredible Georgian-looking house. Very weird but that flat was the only series where he had what I’d term an ‘honest’ place to live.)

BTW has PWB actually got into some big politics thing or is she just a go-to example of someone with privilege who isn’t pulled up on it?

Speaking of podcasts, the latest ep of the SA podcast, Podcasting is Praxis, has just gone live! Why am I pimping this out, you ask? Well, only because I’m ruddy in it  So if you wanna hear your girl cracking a bunch of dumb jokes while smart people talk about the world burning up into a dried husk then check it out!

I spotted this post yesterday, actually. I shared the feedback, we had a chat but decided the UK flag made more sense for our ~brand~, sorry :frowning:

:grinning:

Thanks for being a regular listener though, pal :+1: We’re getting over 600 listens per ep and find the idea of so many people caring about what we have to say quite ridiculous

Have no problem with the flag but I agree with @TheWza that the mic and sickle logo could be clearer. I think a white border around it would help, e.g.

it looks a bit goofy at this resolution but when you look at a thumbnail
image
it’s thick enough to stand out. When I did a 10px thickness it’s not really doing much when scaled

Fuxsake! This help only serves to secure the future of that wretched background. :smiling_imp:

Private school subthread / shit joke that deliberately didn’t make sense.

I dunno who this “Natalie” hosting is, but she has some excellent opinions.

Haha, luckily all the awkward silences and jokes that don’t land are removed by the power of ~the edit~
