the photo ID rule is game over essentially. cleaner than arranging a car crash for the boy i suppose.

don’t think I’ll be able to vote if this comes in

I’m just repeating something I’ve seen on Twitter that I hope is true, but apparently you can register for a postal vote to get around this. Not ideal, but it’s something.

I wonder if they would accept my really out of date provisional driving licence

I actually believe they should.

My bestie wouldn’t be able to - doesn’t have a provisional licence (can’t drive) and he’s never had a passport so would need to go to an in-person passport centre, nearest one to him is Peterborough (more than 60 miles away) and he’d need his parents to drive him there as train connections don’t work at all for him.

Surely this is going to absolutely fuck a load of disabled people :frowning:

According to the Telegraph report re: voter ID, voters would be able to request free photo ID from their local council in the run up to an election.

I don’t know anything about it really but this seems like a big cost to already starving councils. It leaves huge scope for disenfranchising people through admin fuckups and plan just making them feel like not bothering with the whole thing because this extra effort is a clear signal from the powers that be that their vote isn’t wanted.

Yep, that’s exactly it.

Quite. And also because it is very difficult to communicate such a fundamental change to an ENTIRE population at very short notice. All to solve a non-existent problem.

I think there are issues with postal votes and suspected fraud but, this is somewhat different.

I hate them so much

Took six attempts and three elections to get correctly registered by Barnet Council. I don’t fancy anyone’s chances of getting ID out of them for this purpose.

To what extent will this be a thing come the next election?

It sounds like something which would need to get through the Commons and the HoL before being signed into law…

It’s only going to happen if the Tories win the next election, yet another reason to hope like hell that they don’t

Depends on

a) whether Johnson actually survives with his minority government much beyond the Queen’s Speech
b) how many “independent” Tories agree with this policy.

See the Tories are hammering the “Fund the NHS, hang the paedos” line at the Queen’s Speech. Old school Torying really, you have to respect the classics.

‘people have had enough of exports’ was quite good tbf

Remember when the libertarian Tories used to bleat on about how Blair and Brown wanted to introduce compulsory ID card and we’ll live in an Orwellian quagmire
Well now they’re really into it but with punitive administrational/capital based restrictions on democracy, good liberty imho

Far too many fortnite tournaments nowadays imho
