Mark E Smith has so many

“Australians in Europe, The biggest things invented I have ever seen
Their cover versions are naff and they live in Berlin”

“James Murphy is their chief
They show their bollocks when they eat”

“Pink Floyd are short”

So many actually. A whole track about the time Susan Kennedy got amnesia is still my favourite of these though

The One That Got Away by Katy Perry includes the line “We made out in your Mustang to Radiohead” and I’ve always thought it’s massively weird because I can’t think of a single Radiohead song that would be an appropriate soundtrack for the activity in question

This lyric from Dylan surely ranks high on the unexpected references scale:

I was thinkin’ 'bout Alicia Keys, couldn’t keep from crying
When she was born in Hell’s Kitchen, I was living down the line
I’m wondering where in the world Alicia Keys could be
I been looking for her even clear through Tennessee

I asked you to go to the Green Day concert
You said you never heard of them
How cool is that?
So I went to your room and read your diary
Watching Grunge leg drop New Jack through a press table
And then my heart stopped
Listening to Cio-Cio San
Fall in love all over again

Embarrassingly the one that springs to mind is One Direction talking about “way too many people in the Addison Lee”

Not odd or anything but I think a lot about this reference to Felicity the tv show in a song that I like:

I really don’t know what I thought
I think I thought I’d be an artist,
and just like a lot of young people I guess
I pictured myself in the village,
stumbling out of dark bars late at night
in love with the hustle and bustle,
laughing out loud with a handful of friends
A little bit like Keri Russell.

Jimmy Snuka and Steve Austin getting mentioned in that Five song
