Oldness vs skincare (feat. 'why is this so fucking expensive')

my hands always used to be nice but dryness is an issue as of the last year or so :frowning:

I just go for whatever’s cheap at Sainsburys. Strangely my ears get a bit of eczema at this time of year and the Nivea stuff that I’m using at the moment is doing the trick

E45 Hand cream. The skin at the ends of my fingers is a battlefield when it’s cold out, and cracks open up if I’m not using it

Yeah, nothing’s going to save you there. Just remember that it’s relative and your decision not to have children will definitely pay dividends in the long term on this front.

That said, I do use this:

No idea if it helps or not though

Also, if you cba with all sorts of different products just buy something like a good quality vitamin e oil and use it for everything.

This one is real nice.

Or take vitamin e supplements - they made my hair grow so much and my skin looked good

alas. medicated insomniac checking in. i was getting no sleep before parents were getting no sleep

Ah, then I retract my comment.

The other thing to do is invent a time machine, go back 25 years, then advise your younger self to never leave the house when it’s sunny out

THIS. when i naively asked why A used spf-loaded day cream in england when it wasn’t sunny she looked at me like i’d gone mad.

Absolutely seething that i ignored Baz Luhrmann on this.

was kinda hoping someone might say this as while i don’t mind spending a bit on something good it just feels like a semi-con to need tons of stuff.

Yeah, i rarely stick to a skin routine if i do all the different things all the time. That’s just when i feel indulgent. There’s a lovely independent bhsiness i used to buy a face oil from that was lovely and did make a difference. Will try to remember who it was.

I guess just watch it with oil - be sure to wash your face properly so it doesn’t build up and maybe only use it at night depending on your skin.

finally become the me I’ve always dreamed of.

Hi guys! I’m a white middle aged middle class man, and let me tell you, do i have thoughts about skincare beauty standards and costs.

Smash that subscribe button.

CeraVe is great for cleanser and moisturiser and is super cheap.

The number 1 thing you should be doing is wearing a dedicated (read: not moisturiser with spf) SPF of at least factor 30 UVA/UVB every day, all year round.

I also recommend trying a retinol but start gently (once a week) as it can cause dryness and irritation initially. Retinol is applied at night. There are many things you should not put on your skin if you start using retinol so do check this. You MUST wear spf if you use a retinol. Something like this is good and cheap:

You can also add in peptides in your morning routine. Argireline and matrixyl are good. The Ordinary sell both:

Edit: it will take 3-6 months to start seeing the effects of the retinol.

! this is interesting. Why’s that? :o

Thank you - had no idea about that at all!

I’d love to have a cloned ā€˜control’ version of myself - one that never drank, slept exactly 8 hours every night, used expensive moisturiser, never ate McDonalds etc and see how different it looked.

Bet it’d be pretty much the same.

insane timing. good post.

i’ve been using the Bulldog stuff for some time now as it’s regularly on offer in the supermarkets. (I also picked up 3 roll on eye creams in a chazza for 50p each!)

i did have Kiehl’s age defender moisturiser which I loved but £££

It’s all The Ordinary and Inky List over here. It really depends on your skin though - oily v dry etc. For hands, do you wear good gloves? An ounce of prevention is better than a cure.

Also don’t forget to take your skincare down your jaw and neck too! Agree with other posters that toner is a racket. I like a hydrating cleanser as a key part of the routine as I know I’m not great at always doing every step but cleanse and hydrate are my biggest needs

I can’t handle putting on both moisturizer & SPF - my skin is dry but very ā€˜fine’ and just won’t absorb lots of stuff without getting angry and the whole lot pilling everywhere.

E.L.F. Holy Hydration with SPF30 is a good day moisturiser for me, and got me through a trip to NZ without any burning (and i’m very fair) - https://www.superdrug.com/skin/sun-care/face-sun-cream/elf-holy-hydration-face-cream-broad-spectrum-spf-30-50g/p/823819?gclsrc=aw.ds&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&acs_info=ZmluYWxfdXJsOiAiaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuc3VwZXJkcnVnLmNvbS9za2luL3N1bi1jYXJlL2ZhY2Utc3VuLWNyZWFtL2VsZi1ob2x5LWh5ZHJhdGlvbi1mYWNlLWNyZWFtLWJyb2FkLXNwZWN0cnVtLXNwZi0zMC01MGcvcC84MjM4MTkiCg&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIjOXIkZH2gwMVuJxQBh2Y2gxdEAQYASABEgJuhPD_BwE

I don’t really get on with Retinol, but I do seem to be able to handle doing an acid peel once a week - this stuff works, but build up the time you use it for slowly, and SPF like mad the day after - The Ordinary | Skincare – Boots

It’s a bit of a cliche but so much of this is genetics. I rarely remember to even wash my face but my skin belies my age (if i may say so)

The pilling is often caused by using incompatible products together e.g. a silicone based product and a water based product.
