Overseas travel plans

Went a couple of years ago in February half term. Was good - 20c which was lovely for that time of year. Did a boat trip out to an island on the Atlantic coast which was fun.

Colleague of mine in my last job did this a lot, the most extreme example being the visit of Tirana for an hour, his outbound flight to Albania being delayed. Just can not see the appeal myself, coupled with the environmental concerns.

It’s bizarre. The bag allowance included in the basic fare of the budget carriers allows more than enough room for an overnight stay and I reckon in most places you could find somewhere affordable for one night - certainly in Tirana where you can get a whole apartment for 50 quid.

Gotta keep your tier points up!

Hate this so much, the single use clothing Shein haul of holidays.

A work colleague is paying for a flight to Edinburgh that they will not even use, just to collect enough tier points to maintain their level (the one that gives you a year of lounge access)

BA have changed the way tier points grant you access to lounges, and posters on Head For Points are fumin’

Damn, this is a thing now? Hadn’t realised we’d gone all USA on this.

Thankfully my OH, who travels between Switzerland and the UK, found out about this this morning, her train travel scheduled for next week.

The reciprocal one to get into the EU has been put back indefinitely hasn’t it?

Last quarter of 2026

I think this includes Northern Ireland, which could mean all sorts of shite for people holidaying in both Dublin and Belfast

So many plans I’ve been trying to make have been frustrated by a annoying uncommunicative friend, so I’m currently hatching a plan to stick two fingers up to it all and travel solo to Antigua next week (If I can find a suitable scuba course)

Yeah my best mate and I spent months planning a holiday to Mexico and as we were getting towards the point at which I thought we were ready to book, she seemed to disengage. I had to actively confront her about it and she admitted that she’d been having second thoughts for months but had never communicated this to me and was still actively engaging in planning. Lol.

So me and a different mate are off to the White Lotus in a couple of weeks instead :thailand:

It was only when I told him that I was planning on doing stuff on my own that he admitted that he had far too much on at the moment. Antigua’s off next week, but I might go in June now - although technically that’s the start of hurricane season. Hmmm.

It turns out that it is, but come here for the Easter weekend and it’ll rain without pause.

I see from old posts that Malta isn’t a popular DiS destination but any tips appreciated.

I liked Malta. Valletta is beautiful (we stayed in Sliema and hopped across on the ferry). Had great day trips to Gozo, Mdina and Rabat. Public transport was great for getting about - when we visited buses were a flat fare if you went one stop or traversed the whole island. Avoid any accommodation near a church as the bells clang right through night.

Doing Girona wit a day in Barca and one in Figueres/Perpignan next. Public transport options seem decent.

Don’t stay in St Paul’s bay. One of the grossest places I’ve stayed with so much dog shit, cigarette butts and used condoms where you are meant to go swimming.

Went to Mdina which was fine for a few hours. Not sure what the rest of Malta was like as I firmly stayed within the grounds of the Hilton hotel after I saw what I needed to see.
