Think this is actually key and something people overlook. Remember a partner coming into my office when I was a trainee and her saying “it’s half six, why are you still here?” and cutting off my very stressed reply with “will anyone die if you don’t get this done today? Then go home.”

She doesn’t work there any more, obviously.

Literally this. Fear/anxiety and also just feeling that if something needs to be done I have to get it done. (especially at the end of the month)
Also not wanting to let colleagues down.

Unpaid overtime is expected and you cannot question it. I accept that due to the nature of my job it is sometimes a necessity, but I received this gem of a group email yesterday which really does take the piss:

‘Please get this done as soon as possible, as it is one of your many responsibilities that has to be done, by staying up late at night, working at the airport, or if possible on a long airplane flight. Those who are successful do all of the previous tasks in my sentence prior to this one’

Apart from their appalling English it’s just an appalling thing to send to people who are clearly struggling. Fucking Americans.

Kind of as a point of principle refuse to do any longer than my contracted hours, which is made easier by the fact that beyond senior management it’s just really not the culture to stay late. If I do work late (there’s some events I have to work) you get the TOIL back and I’m also allowed to start early/finish late to accrue TOIL if I need to which is cool.

Unless I’ve been informed way in advance about it, I’d probably end up doing way less due to my head spinning about the fact that I’d expected differently for the day

An awful lot of people get company coaches into work (because it’s a bit remote), so have to leave on time. And as a consequence, they let other people leave on time too, so it’s fair for everyone.

Every now and then there’s evening / weekend work, but it’s all properly planned.

My hours are 9 to 5:30, but I’m quite often here past 6 and I’m home by 6:30-6:45.

But when I’m home, I forget about work.

Although I do one late a week, 9 to 8:30. But that’s paid.

I do not like the initialism TOIL.

I do work as in work on other projects at home but rarely work on work stuff.

I feel like it takes me awhile to properly settle into my ongoing work since it keeps getting disrupted by meetings/impromptu requests so I occasionally work a bit later on in the day if I’m feeling particularly productive.

It’s insidious that even non-working time has that acronym.
