This industrial pencil sharpener my dad had from work. I didn’t know where it was or if he still had it or not. It turned up at the back of a cupboard recently, and so now it’s mine.

I think that we had those exact pencil sharpeners in our junior school. They were attached to the front of the teacher’s desk (no idea why we had to go to the teacher’s desk to sharpen our pencils).

Yeah it’s got a bit at the bottom you can attach a clamp with.

My dad was a building surveyor, and he’s also got a box of dried up Rapidograph pens in a cupboard which he’s convinced he might use again some day. My dad used to spend a lot of time swearing at them in the 80s because they blocked up if you looked at them, and there were loads of tricks like putting them in boiling water and hitting them against tables to get them working again (or repeatedly patiently taking them apart, cleaning them with alcohol and then putting them back together). I think they dramatically improved the ink at some point.

I love a good clutch pencil.

If the ink from rapidograph pens did improve, it must have done so in the past decade, as they still used to block up all the time when I used them.

Oh it still blocked up, but it used to be even worse. My dad was thrilled when the gel technical pens came in.

I use Poscas now, which are great in terms of flow/coverage, but have the splatter factor. At least I can get rid of that on the computer (or with tippex-which handily disappears in scans if you don’t apply it lumpily- my school art teacher would be horrified)

No lie, I was teaching a school workshop with a girl who was convinced she was terrible and shouldn’t even try drawing and hated it. I let her use my fancy pencil for a bit, and she was suddenly a convert.
