a) Passively watching a film is not the same as being part of a fandom, and you know this
b) Black Panther is 6/10

Also I was once on my own at my old job and ran around the warehouse with a broom yelling the theme from the films

And yet I’m still a more well rounded adult than the people in that twitter thread

Dunno if he is racist, he made a stupid racist joke for which he apologised, don’t think it means he is permanently a racist, he is sexist though

Remember when Lavender Brown was black in the first film and then was quietly changed to a white actor when it became clear Ron was going to have to date her

oh yeah it’s weird too cause none of the main harry potter actors can act.

I truly believe being English and playing a standard English person is an acting job anybody could do. Does anyone ever talk along to the Archers. Acting is so easy unless you have to do an accent

there was also a sexual harassment thing around him but I can’t remember the details

Just try and avoid using shared interests as common ground for forming relationships with other people and you’ll be ok

Happy to share a house with AFX.

I can definitely see a visit to Harry Potter world or whatever the fuck it is in my future. My GF has been steadily going through the audiobooks lately and her interest in the series has gone up again.

Discworld is better obviously but the HP books weren’t a bad pop cultural phenomenon to have around as a child or into early adolescence. Turned my brother into a reader of books where previously he hated reading, which is only a good thing.

Is this post too neutral for this thread?

I think it was extremely badly judged irony, but he didn’t double down when called out, he apologised what else could he do, people make mistakes, so I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt, Stephin Merritt is no stranger to racism allegations too

Just preparing my ā€œDisintegration State is a Ravenclaw labelā€ tweet now

Since becoming a dad my blog has basically dwindled to fuck all, I’ve struggled to find the energy though I keep telling myself I’ll get back into it.

Re: Growing up, yes, I probably mis-phrased that, but I think if your tastes have calcified at the level of Harry Potter that’s self-limiting in a fairly harmful way. It’s all very good handwaving that this is a difference in ā€œpreference of source materialā€ but we can’t just say one thing is as good as another, there’s no qualitative difference between the Mr Men books and Melville.

some children’s book series which are better than harry potter:

  • his dark materials
  • garth nix abhorsen ones
  • those ones with the cities on wheels or whatever
  • in search of lost time

Aye why has this word become such a thing? It’s like liking something now has to mean you’re part of a club. Even see it with bands.
