Half responsible for the most surreal combination of show and musical guest in British telly history.

Became obsessed with this song, my first introduction to it was this version

RIP

Was gonna post a vid but couldn’t decide, haha! Such a cool guy who was a real cornerstone of all of late 20th Century underground music… just feel like he influenced everyone from Tom Waits, to Devo, to Talking Heads, to Pixies, to Modest Mouse… let alone a myriad of current bands. Was wild he and Pere Ubu were still a going concern til so recently.

At our gig on Saturday I had the classic set-up chat with the soundman… ā€œIs it OK if we put on our own playlist for the night?,ā€ to try and gently stop him away from playing QOTSA and the Chili Peppers (and to further forewarn him that it wasn’t a normal ROCK show, haha). This was the first tune the blasted out of the PA.

I’ve somehow never really connected to their music despite it being exactly the kind of thing I normally love. Going to try again today. Any suggestions other than The Modern Dance or Dub Housing?

This version is tonnes better than the recorded version.

Terminal tower - comp of early singles and b sides.

Really like The Modern Dance but have never listened to much beyond it

Ah, never a band I was hugely into, but RIP David.

Oh, sad news. I hadn’t realised he was sick.

I only really got into Pere Ubu in the past 2-3 years and did an album by album listen last year.

  1. Dub Housing
  2. The Modern Dance
  3. The Tenement Year
  4. Cloudland

Never got to see them live unfortunately.

Very sad about this. I struggled with Pere Ubu for years, though I gave them another chance when Lady From Shanghai came out - that album changed me. They were completely liberated from any one style or sound, yet always were distinctively Pere Ubu.

Me and a friend once went on a David Thomas pilgrimage to his local boozer, The Neptunes in Hove. I didn’t clock him at first, but on the table next to us was the man himself, while a covers band played ā€˜Born To Be Wild’ in the corner of the room. I could hardly contain myself.

Can we add David Thomas to the title?

Always considered going to one of their Dublin shows but never bothered in the end, never got round to investigating any of their new stuff to see if it would be worth it. Oh well

Lady of Shanghai and St Arkansas are my favourites of the post 2000 albums
