Petty Victories

A thread for when you’re a bit of a prick but they deserve it.

If someone emails me more than three times trying to sell me something unsolicited, i send a c+p’d legal request asking them to provide all details they currently have about me on their db, in line with ICO/GDPR.

one guy today said “point taken, i will stop emailing, i assume you don’t actually need us to provide all of that?”

to which i was happily able to say “nope: send those details over to prevent further legal action.”

Sorry josh/greg/grod/chunp - you need to learn <3

When have YOU been petty?

I got an email through this morning that still had the placeholder [insert name] stuff in it, and my petty victory is that I have resisted replying along the lines of: “Dear [name], I would be happy to advise on [relevant product or service]. My hourly rate is [£number*{timewaster_multiplier}]+VAT…”

I do a similar thing with recruitment agents - never quite gone as far as you but I’ve threatened contacting the ICO on them.

I’ve taken to behaving quite pettily as a cyclist (though it’s out of self defence so I think it’s totally justifiable). Car drivers have a habit of trying to overtake me adjacent or close to a traffic island - there’s barely enough room for me and a car, let alone the required 5ft distance. So every time I approach one and I can feel a car prepping to overtake, I look round, possibly signal right, and position myself in the middle of the lane so they can’t overtake.

Next step will be to get one of these (attached to the right hand side of my bike, obviously)

yup regularly do similar. my favourite is if i’m cycling on the left and there’s a car parked in the upcoming bike lane. you better believe i am signalling right and looking over my shoulder repeatedly at the twat trying to rear end me before pulling out and doing exactly as you do

To be honest that’s just good road positioning. It’ll wind people up but it’s legitimate and it’s contributing to road safety. Apart from the signalling

I went into Tesco this morning about 9am and bought their last copy of the guardian (yeah I still buy it occasionally, sue me). So as a protest I piled all the other papers up together with the mail, sun and telegraph at the bottom of the pile under the Croydon advertiser.

Oh 100% -

On a local one mile circle that I often ride repeatedly there’s one set of traffic lights, with one of those forward cycle boxes in front of it. If I’m sitting on the left side and a car drives into it or as seems to be even more weirdly common drives half into it then I just sit there staring ahead but saying out loud things like “have you got a driving licence?” and “you’re breaking the law” until the lights change which is not only completely futile but makes me look like a weirdo and a dick for good measure

I’ve been known to deliberately park my bike three inches from their front bumper in such circumstances…

I do that all the time.

It’s good road sense and helps me to control the traffic behind.

Yep especially if a car has intentionally driven into the cycle box I am getting right in front of them.

I did exactly this about half an hour ago. Made a nice slow getaway when the lights changed too.
