was my third read I think and the films have kinda ruined it for me. that said, even some of the parts I was looking forward to weren’t as good as I remembered. The scouring of the shire is actually kinda bad. Ah well.

I think I’d broadly agree with this although I haven’t read it in ages. The weirdest thing about this is that he actually can tell an exciting and dynamic story that isn’t weighed down by overly descriptive prose: The Hobbit, which is a far better book.

I’m wondering if we need a separate fantasy thread.

-do we already have one?

-is ‘sci fi’ a broad enough church to cover all the elf/dwarf/wizard chat (clearly no)

-would ‘fantasy’ be misrepresented and it’ll turn into a rolling filth thread (a bad thing or a bonus?)

-would it be full of people slating LOTR in which case I’m not sure I want any part of it frankly?

-should I start one?

I think it might be interesting, because there is a lot of interesting fantasy out there that gets lost under the mountains of Sanderson / Jordan / Rothfuss blockbuster dreck. It would be good to see some of that highlighted.
