Never heard of this, sounds like Posh Gits’ Larks.

One of the girls I went to school with was on this and she was one of the ‘worst’ ones on the show.

Hope she’s ok tbh

Actually just remembered that I found a letter my mum gave me when I went on this trip which reading back as an adult the subtext is very ‘look, I know you’re weird and struggle to make or have friends, and that this is likely going to be hell for you. And that you never pay attention and have a habit of then getting lost because of it. Just, y’know. Try and have some fun and pay attention’

Why? As I said up thread, if you didn’t have free childcare in the form of grandparents it worked out not much more expensive than staying put. Most kids I met seemed to be from fairly similar backgrounds to me.

Sorry it was so unpleasant for you :frowning:

I really struggled with making friends there too - always ended up being left out of things and leaving anything social early to sit outside or walk about the grounds. But I really liked the activities, so it was still a net positive for me.

Yeah some of the activities were great and if I could do it now I would, and I’m old enough not to care about anything else really.

From what I remember I think there were a couple of kids from my school there who I got along with to a degree so still had a ‘group’ to be with.

Wish we could have a DiSer PGL, would be ace. Although I’m probably too fat for most of the activities now oops.

I’d be up for that. Ridiculously expensive to do anything similar as adults isn’t it, like centre parcs or something

Have a look at the company Much Better Adventures. Or G Adventures. I’ve done white water rafting, ziplining, canyoning, kayaking, paddle boarding and tons of other stuff.

I have worked at summer camps most years since 2008.

The language immersion kind though. So kids come from various different countries, have English lessons in the morning, and then various activities and trips in the afternoon and evening.

You basically have no life for about 3 weeks, but leave with a couple of thousand pounds, and if you lived in, all meals provided. (The food varies but is usually ok).

I’m there as a teacher/sometimes also pastoral staff, and they also usually get local university students in for the sports and outdoorsy stuff and to help make up the numbers on daytrips.

You get very good at counting people on and off buses.

Only skim-read the thread looking for an explanation of the acronym in the title, but saw mentions of archery, and maybe boats of some sort?

This is bringing back memories of being bullied at Guide Camp by a girl who was supposed to be my friend (most of the people who bullied me over the years were supposed to be my friend tbf).

She started a rumour that I got up in the night and was humping the pole in the middle of the tent. Think I did an OK job of laughing that one off.
We were washing pots together at the taps after a cookout and she threw water over my crotch then when we were all gathered round in a circle afterwards she was loudly telling everyone I’d wet myself.

There was loads of other petty shit I can’t remember now but at the end of the week the camp leaders made us shake hands, both say sorry to each other and hug.

Good times!

Urgh. What a twat. :hugs:

Everyone else have those awful tents at camp where you rolled up the sides and made bedding rolls with your sleeping bag and a bit of rope like it was the 1940s??

Icelandic tents! I loved those. Went on Scout trips every summer for two weeks and learning how to put up and maintain those tents was so satisfying.

Might do a mega post on my time in Beavers/Cubs/Scouts.

One of the first threads I made on new DiS was about Cubs/Scouts and I recall you made some good contributions :+1:

  • During my childhood I was made to apologise to another child who was bullying me
  • Not apologise but had to ‘shake hands’ and ‘make friends’
  • Neither

one of the things that often strikes me as having got a million times better in recent years - child protection. think its a real achievement

I got sent on some of these but was too bad tempered to take part in any of the group activities. Few other memories

Went on a school trip to France where we did loads of “team building” exercises. Didn’t work as we were a bunch of miserable teenagers who hated each other.

One of the reps did a thing where he fell off a log and we were all supposed to catch him to establish “trust”. Not a single kid put their arms out. He hit the ground hard in a cloud of dust. The poor man was furious!

Still, just never trust surly teenagers
