Pick and Mix always makes me think of going on walks with my grandma; weā€™d go down to the rec and walk through a bit of the common, then weā€™d go to Eddieā€™s (which I can still smell if I think about it enough), the newsagent in the weird post-war village centre, and get some pick and mix. Technically it wasnā€™t pick and mix, Eddie had those big plastic jars and youā€™d ask him for a quantity of each thing you wanted, and heā€™d put it in one of those little paper bags that came on a string punched through the corner. Sometimes they were plain white, sometimes they were white and pink stripes. My absolute favourites were the blue and white dolphins and the shandies. They were also great because they were light, so you got more of them for your money. A good mixture of those with a couple of rhubarb and custards thrown in was a great bag. My brother always had what were referred to as midget gems, which I think were just hard gums by a different name. I loved going to Eddieā€™s so much.

Foam bananas are great

Youā€™re going to end up with the least offensive sweet, not the best one

Just finished big bag of pick n mix I got for secret santa

A lot of the garden centres my parents used to drag me to had a big pick and mix concession. They always looked badly maintained andā€¦ slightly repulsive.

One of the containers always contained giant gobstoppers. I vividly remember that those giant gobstoppers were almost always covered in wasps. Like, there were all the possible sweets to go for, but they always went for those giant gobstoppers. Wonder why?

Hey, time for some amazing gobstoppers facts!

  • Gobstoppers take four days to produce!
  • They typically consist of 90% sugar!
  • No-one ever opted for them in their pick and mix!

Hereā€™s an excellent five minute video from How Itā€™s Made:

Only once got a giant gobstobber. Very impractical thing, took me like a week to get through and thereā€™s no real good way to store in in-between sessions. Murder on the tongue eventually too.

pick and mix is so good
