Gonna see em in Leeds

Just checking in to say they absolutely smashed it in Leeds last night. So tight and good. Anyway that’s it, cheers!

&&^%!$ing &^((*&-headed Barbara Streisands! I feel even more terrible for missing that now. All because I’ve been trying, er, futilely to save up for some holiday in Seville I’m not going to be able in any way to afford. Sorry - we had some good chat about ā€œcome to Oxford!ā€ a few months back.

Hope it was excellent, especially Martha and Pile!

Pile was pretty much one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen. They played 45 mins without stopping between songs, in a flipping loud room, and they were so intense to the point that Rick’s amp caught fire at the end of it. Beautiful. I’m not a mega Martha fan but they were great and people went nuts for it, so that was

Got Green & Gray after hearing ā€˜My Employer’ on the radio, which was my first introduction to them. Was pleasantly surprised that some of the tracks were absolute ragers with a load of that Polvo-esque guitar going on. Was expecting something a lot more sedate on the back of what I’d heard. Definitely one of my favourites from 2019 though, and a bit of a slow burner.

Gonna pick up Dripping next, which I’ve read is the high water mark. Will happily stream the rest and find out though.

It’s a slow burn amazing freak out (doesn’t sound right). Definitely going to be in my top tem of the year

Dripping is great, but Magic is Real is also definitely worth a punt. The opening three track run to that is immense.

And you know…all their albums have some great stuff.

Gig in London was great. I had to bail early cause it was a Sunday night so I missed Prom Song which was a real shame.

Saw them in Brussels on Sat, such a good band!

Its a crime they arent bigger

Also green and grey is still getting many repeated listens

I put them on in Oxford last year and their rider included something about shitloads of weed so I think they would approve of your listening condition.

Discovered them through Green and Gray, which ended up being one of my favorite albums of last decade. I love how suddenly explosive it gets at times.

I’m really enjoying A Hairshirt of Purpose too now. Can’t really think of anything that that hits that weird mix of snaking but bouncy guitars in the same way.

That Pile tour was one of the last gigs I attended.
Sigh.

They were dead good in Leeds. Very much enjoyed Rick walking into the audience and screaming maniacally inches from people’s faces during The Soft Hands of Stephen Miller. That’ll never be allowed in a post-covid gig experience!!!

PILE UPDATE!

Free recording of the livestream they did with their original 2011-17 line-up on Bandcamp last week:

Also available to buy on Bandcamp here:

Lastly: there’s a new ā€˜improvisational album’ coming out next month! They’ve also got a 50 minute record of ā€˜songs’ (which isn’t apparently a full-length LP) coming out later in the year, and they’re working on a ā€˜new full length LP’ as well.

I do love this band. The word ā€˜improvisational’ would usually strike terror into my heart but they’re all about the barely controlled chaos anyway!

Great news! Always awesome to hear more Pile.

That was deadly Uncle Jill sounds so good!

God bless Pile!
