Places that have changed names

I see that the BBC is now calling Kiev “Kyiv”. What other examples are there?

Ayer’s Rock - Uluru
Humberside - East Yorkshire

Your Mum’s house to “Me and your Mum’s house”

Sorry.

Oil of Ulay - Oil of Olay
Jif - Cif
Opal Fruits - Starburst

Literally all of the places on the planet that the Brits turned up to and went “This is called something else now” with that are slowly but surely being changed back.

Istanbul was Constantinople
Now it’s Istanbul, not Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Oh Constantinople
Now it’s Turkish delight on a moonlit night
Every gal in Constantinople
Lives in Istanbul, not Constantinople
So if you’ve a date in Constantinople
She’ll be waiting in Istanbul
Even old New York was once New Amsterdam
Why they changed it I can’t say
People just liked it better that way
So, Take me back to Constantinople
No, you can’t go back to Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Oh Constantinople
Why did Constantinople get the works?
That’s nobody’s business but the Turks
Istanbul
Istanbul
Istanbul
Istanbul
Even old New York was once New Amsterdam
Why they changed it I can’t say
People just liked it better that way

Yeah that’s true. Like Bombay is now Mumbai, even though loads of people there (especially the middle class Muslim population) still call it Bombay and hate that the change was pushed through by a political group backed by a populist Hindu movement and say that the name Mumbai is basically made-up.

All the geographical phenomena as well, “This is now called Lake Victoria”

So ridiculous

The Palace Pier in Brighton is now officially called “Brighton Pier” - but there is talk of changing it back

Millennium Dome - now the O2

Town and Country Club - now the Forum (I think, is that right?)

All the nightclubs in Brighton are now called different things from when I used to go to them

Burma/Myanmar
Peking/Beijing

New York is an interesting one - “Manna-hata” is Algonquin for ‘Island of the hills’/ “Mennahatenk” means ‘place where one gathers bows’ …apparently

They are special places in our memory.

I don’t think I even knew Peking and Beijing were the same place.

Does this guy know how to party or what?
