Well, that sucks - good band. I maybe didn’t like their most recent album as much as its predecessors, but nonetheless this one is a banger…
I’m the opposite, really enjoyed the last album but didn’t care for the previous. Anyways, I hope the singer is doing okay as she seemed to be in a bad place many of the last albums songs.
That’s a shame. I’ve been following them ever since I caught them at EOTR 2019 whilst waiting for BC,NR. Really cathartic and raw live, that I’m not sure they ever fully captured in record
What?? 2nd album was excellent, and while i don’t think the new one built on that I’m sure the songs could have worked live and thought they’d just get bigger and bigger. Felt like they were very much in a niche of currently popular indie without pandering, big crossover audience between them, Pillow Queens, SPRINTS, boygenius etc
Pretty surprised
I think a big reason for their lack of success was due to the band name.
And the grinding repetition of the lyrics.
I became aware of these guys, Shopping and Dry Cleaning all around the same time. Like all of them, but seriously guys?
That’s just their thing though. I like it ![]()
Georgie is someone I crossed paths with a couple of times, first in Winchester then in London at a couple of Keel Her gigs. This was pre-Porridge Radio so a very long time ago. She was very nice.
I think she’s been in another band, so was googling then ended up seeing this.
Christ. No updates on the band account since then so fingers crossed it has panned out ok.
I mean they’re playing 600-1000 capacity venues, which is exactly where I’d expect them to be
Unless they were all half empty, I don’t think that’s a lack of success
Enjoyed their brixton electric gig last year but that was 2/3rd full
Shame, always enjoyed them live and on record
Never understand why people think the name’s a problem really. Probably the biggest band of the century are called Arctic Monkeys.
but at their level of the industry, it could have more impact surely?
Arctic Monkeys were enormous right from the start
have Porridge Radio had a number 1 single and big news coverage?
I think it’s a pretty terrible name but I also think names don’t matter much unless they’re actively offensive or hard to search/say
good point about search
maybe that was part of the thinking, unless it has another meaning somewhere
Felt like they were doing quite well for a while but I don’t think I even knew the latest album existed tbh
nominated for the mercury, that’s a fairly decent high point to reach given how much music is made and released
wouldn’t be surprised if the finances of being in the band were savage though, even though they’ve been able to tour america etc.
I loved their last album and voted it for it in my top 5 but I was the only one on DIS. Similarly, it didn’t seem to appear on any end-of-year lists in the media. I don’t know why, because I loved it, but it clearly didn’t get any traction and I guess it’s hard to continue when that happens.
Yeah, even though they’re doing relatively well on face value I wouldn’t be surprised if the margins of making it work are tight and after a fair few years of plugging away they’re just a bit done with it. Am a little bit surprised at how quickly they’re calling it, thought they might try and do a farewell tour and festival season or something. Maybe they really are just knackered.
Am a little bit sad, neither of their last two have really clicked with me as much but Every Bad is one of my albums of the decade and I listened to it so much through lockdown. Always enjoyed them live too, would have made more effort to catch them on the last tour if I’d known it would be my last chance.
