Portishead- SOS

Don’t know if anyone else has highlighted this

Portishead’s amazing cover of ABBA’s SOS, made for the film High Rise but not, I think ever available outside of the film, is on Soundcloud.

One of those rare, completely revelatory covers. You can make an argument that the darkness of the cover matches the lyrics better than the original.

Whilst I agree, hot damn that is bleak. Need something right chirpy for the car now.

Thy played this during the “tribute” to Jo Cox at Glastonbury. Took place on the Pyramid Stage at about 11am the day after the Brexit vote under grey skies. Was a very bleak morning.

How can it not be bleak with lyrics like this? Ian Curtis at his darkest seems chirpy in comparison.

Where are those happy days, they seem so hard to find
I try to reach for you but you have closed your mind
Whatever happened to our love? I wish I understood
It used to be so nice, it used to be so good

So when you’re near me, darling can’t you hear me, S.O.S.
The love you gave me, nothing else can save me, S.O.S.

When you’re gone
How can I even try to go on?
When you’re gone
Though I try, how can I carry on?

You seemed so far away, though you were standing near
You made me feel alive but something died, I fear
I really tried to make it up, I wish I understood
What happened to our love, it used to be so good

So when you’re near me, darling can’t you hear me, S.O.S.
The love you gave me, nothing else can save me, S.O.S.

When you’re gone
How can I even try to go on?
When you’re gone
Though I try, how can I carry on?

So when you’re near me, darling can’t you hear me, S.O.S.
And the love you gave me, nothing else can save me, S.O.S.

When you’re gone
How can I even try to go on?
When you’re gone
Though I try, how can I carry on?
When you’re gone
How can I even try to go on?
When you’re gone
Though I try, how can I carry on?

nah not a patch on the original, soz

Also agree with this.

But then the original is one of the perfect pop songs.

I don’t think it really matters whether one is ‘better’ or ‘worse’ really. I just think this is really striking and good in itself and gives a new perspective on the original. That’s all a cover needs to do.
