any helpful mantras for stuff like this?

Like something you can say to yourself that allows you to let go and live in the present?

Have an incredibly negative self-talk at all sports. Make a mistake and will just mutter under my breath calling myself a cunt. But by god it works

  • positive experiences leave an impression that I can draw from in tough times
  • I quickly forget when things have worked out well for me

I feel like the prevalence on having to think positively especially in the workplace is pretty toxic. Some things are just bad.

I am an anxious wreck but an optimistic at heart! I think worrying does help?? my anxiety in that i can prepare for different scenarios which helps lower the feelings of anxiety. It also fuels the anxiety though but i think i thought that being a worrier was a stupid thing but actually i think it has made me a more empathetic, careful and considerate person

  • I have become more optimistic as I’ve gotten older
  • no change that I’m aware of
  • some things are easier to be optimistic about, others harder
  • I have become less optimistic as I’ve gotten older

I don’t really work well with mantras but one i like is “don’t wait for a perfect day” which is addressing the urge to procrastinate and wait for ideal conditions

I like it when other people say stuff like “we’ll deal with that if/when it happens” but I can’t get that mindset to work for me

Not sure if I’ve become more optimistic as I’ve got older, but I’ve definitely become more accepting of the things I can’t change and worry about them less.

that’s the best outcome I think, being able to accept situations

I’m not super pessimistic but I will instinctively take up a negative position when faced with overwhelming positivity.

To be fair, it’s hard to say if it is an actual change in mindset or just a change in circumstances. I’m much more financially, personally and professionally settled now than I was when I was younger so objectively there is less to worry about.

I think that obviously it makes it easier to deal with the remaining things there are that you can’t control. I can still get anxious at times, often about quite trivial things, but I can usually shake myself out of it.

everything is terrible

not so much for me personally, but in the wider sense, climate doom, eternal tory rule etc.

hilarious if anyone tells me to think positive

I was thinking more in your own life but I imagine stuff like this can still cut down similar lines of thinking:

it’s out of my control so why worry about it too much etc

Vaguely believe in this stuff - not like in a way of actually influencing anything, but more that you are more likely to take a chance on something if you believe there’s a possibility of it paying off.

I very nearly missed my train today. I could of thought, ‘oh no I’ve missed my train’, bumbled along and missed it, but I thought positively, had a little jog along the platform and caught the train with seconds to spare! What a lesson!

I think positive thinking probably has a huge impact on your quality of life personally.

I wouldn’t say I am a positive thinker but I’m definitely not a negative thinker. I just don’t worry about anything I have no control over. I was a depressed teenager as I’m sure many of us were, but as an adult, I’ve managed to always live in the moment and have no particular plans, expectations or fears for the future. It’s very liberating, and it’s done wonders for my demeanour.

I should add I mean living in the moment not in the kind of demonstrative social media “YOLO” way, but just adapting to the world around as things happen and trying not to have any unrealistic expectations - I live a very risk-averse and some might think boring life but I’m happy.
