Oh, I see, they all come out of the woodwork in defence of Maladroit now. Good to see, I guess. At the time I thought it was sort of a return to form after Green. It gets very ropey from here for many albums.

Not out the woodwork! I had no opinion of the album itsrlf before really apart from assuming it was poor.

Make Believe is going to be interesting…

Make Believe is unfairly maligned, dunno why people hate it so much, reckon they base it on the singles, it is light and breezy like green but with a bit more feeling (hold me, pardon me, the build up at the beginning of perfect situation), the guitar leads don’t just mirror the vocals like on green, find it baffling this one is considered the worst

i’m more joking about the level of positive response after your run through. In last Month’s Weezer thread some high-horsed wrongsayer, flat out told me i was wrong about maladroit and i’m still aghast!

Bloody love Maladroit. Maybe helps that it was released when I first got into Weezer so it sort of blends in with the classics, but it stands up on its own - genuinely great album (definitely better than Green)

I really cant remember if I have heard Make Believe before. I know I had Maladroit but I just couldnt recall it. I think all I’ve heard on Make Believe is the two singles so I am intrigued, will go in open minded

Good work but you’re vv wrong about the Fall Together solo, it’s killer.

that edit is bonkers.

on the Teen Spirit point, cutting down half an instrumental makes more structural sense than just splicing the chorus in half - cutting out the title of the song, to boot!

Probably cuz it’s about drugs innit

Listening to this again for the first time in a while. First 10 seconds of ‘Death And Destruction’ captures the spirit of the whole album for me. There’s an atmosphere and intimacy to it they’ve never been able to recapture

Rivers most emotive writing after Pinkerton as well, probably.

still it is the title of the song, unless they renamed it pipe it seems kind of pointless

Thought that but the full chorus is in later.

Make Believe!

I’m not going to bother listening to Beverly Hills again as it is such an appalling song. I don;t know how it got so big but I think that the song’s success is responsible for the shitty output they’re doing now. It’s just thoroughly thoroughly unlikeable.

Perfect Situation - apparently this was a single but I don’t recall ever hearing it? Anyway, it’s alright. Rivers voice is quite good, sounds like there’s some real emotion in it. The piano in the verse is a bit annoying though, makes it sound like The Fray or something. Oh dear the bridge and solo are awful too. It’s all very designed for radio really.

This Is Such A Pity - it reallly is. What on earth are the keyboard sounds? Apparently this is Rivers favourite song but it’s awful. It sounds really out dated and not in a good way. The lyrics as well are just really basic and all a bit strange. You can tell the wheels are starting to come off

Hold Me - when this went to a song there was a Spotify advert and the jingle sounds like it could’ve been on the album. The start sounds like a slowed down version of She Hates Me by Puddle of Mudd. The power choruses are starting to get a bit grating, and the backing music throughout the album just really isn’t very good. This song is four and a half minutes long and it’s instantly forgettable.

Peace - sounds like All American Rejects. All these songs follow the same formula and are blending into one. Half way through, I don’t think this album is awful or offensive, it’s jsut very bland and obviously designed for radio plays but in some ways, that’s probably worse as at least now there is some joy to be had in quite how shocking is. This is just lifeless

We Are All On Drugs - I know this song gets maligned and it uses the tune to that diarrhoea song but I don’t actually mind it that much? It’s obviously nonsense but it’s quite stomping really. The chorus is quite fun. It’s the best song on here so far I would say because it has it’s own identity I guess. It’s still not great but I’d rather listen to it then the rest of the snoozefest

The Damage In Your Heart - and now we’re back to the rest of the album. Bland. When did Rivers forget how to write a tune? I don’t really have much to say on this song cause it’s irrelevant really

Pardon Me - the same piano sound as before! it’s still as annoying! this now sounds like Alanis Morrissette a little bit. The chorus here is alright I guess, but the verses are just trash. I’m really struggling to give my thoughts on the songs cause I just don’t have any

My Best Friend - my lord! that intro! whats with the wurlitzer sound? why are they doing a call and resonse with the guitars? this is fucking shit. the chorus!! “you’re my best friend and I love you” to a bouncy guitar. oh dear me, this is painful. I’m quite glad for it cause at least there’s something to get annoyed at rather than just sit listen blankly. This song is bloody awful

The Other Way - the pre chorus on this is kinda good. the lyrics are a bit sketchy again but there seems to be some proper song writing in this. oh no, they’ve added handclaps. oh they’re persisting with the hand claps. why are they doing this

Freak Me Out - the music reminds me a bit of a Brand New song, the opening of Guernica I think. its making it sound like a lullaby, coupled with Rivers hushed lyrics. the chorus also sounds a bit like a Britpop song which is going to bug me. I do not like this

Haunt You Every Day - glad this is the last song, cba any more. It’s just the same as the rest. Verse, power chorus, verse, power chorus, ill fitting solo, chorus repeated. Rivers is singing along to the solo though for some reason. He sounds like he’d be a hippy at a bonfire strumming along.

i thought this album was shit. It wasn’t as offensively bad as i thought it was going to be, but just really really dull. it’s so commercialised and ttheir sound is just really watered down. I actually think We Are All On Drugs is the best song on account of it being the least shit. That Best Friend song is tragically bad though,

Death and Destruction is massively underrated. I don’t like the lead guitar runs but that outro is beautiful, closest they’ve ever got to sounding that pretty since Only in Dreams.

I think the album generally sounds too polished and 80s hair metal sounding with the guitars, if it was across the board a little rawer and had Dave Friedman producing/engineering it would have sounded loads better.

You on the Unwound now to cool down?

the album make believe could have been

Certainly am!
