Potatoes

Incredible invention. When it all comes down to it, probably the greatest foodstuff of them all. Here’s the definitive ranking of the main types:

Chips
Dauphinois
Roast
Mash
Sautee
Hash brown
Jacket
Waffle
Boiled

But who am I kidding? They’re all great!

I want to go to this place in Sefton for this potato dish…

Where would jackets appear in the list?

Just behind cheese as the GOAT. Can’t think of a single bad version I can even cope with boiled at a push so long as they are well seasoned and smothered in butter.

Sometimes I buy that potato and spinach gratin side dish for two from M&S and have it all as my main. This is my secret potato filth

Haven’t included crisps in the original ranking as they’re a separate entity and will be given their own thread at some point if I carry on this series.

Ooofft that does look nice. What cheese do they stick on top?

Massive fan of hasselback at the moment. Bit of a faff in some respects to do.

I don’t know anything about it, except it does need more grease on it. Might take my own block of cheese and grater.

It’s a “Guinness rarebit pomme anna, bois boudran”

Crystal clear.

Really want potatoes for my lunch now.

Kinda really want to try this at some point

The unsung hero of the vegetable world, I suppose*. Often unspectacular and usually even a bit boring but they always seem to be there, quietly putting in a solid 7/10 performance every week.

Get the occasional star performance. Dauphinoise are generally good and all the other forms - even mash - can shine now and then.

*I say ‘unsung hero’, even though they are vastly overrated quite often.
