Shields was with them late 90s (maybe 98?) through to about 2004/5 I think. He definitely did all of the XTRMNTR/Evil Heat tours.

Pretty much my introduction to Primal Scream too, not knowing them as a 16 year old. Was Reading Festival 2003 and I remember Gillsepie being on particularly belligerent form. Called the whole crowd a ‘bunch of hippies’ and ‘slaves to Metallica’ (headliners) before launching into Kill All Hippies. I was sold.
Spoke to him at the Nick Cave show London show last year and said that performance had made a big impression on me. “Yeah that was a weird show for us” he said. GBOL

Remember some footage of them refusing to leave the stage at Glastonbury one year after overrunning. Gillespie giving it “ye want fuckin Basement Jaxx?” Bit of a state but also pretty cool.

Their set in Reading 2000 was incredible though, played every song as if it was the last of the night. Completely brutal.

Just looked at the lineup again… very on brand and of its time but Christ. Of all the days to put them on as well, sandwiched between Good Charlotte and Sum 41!
Jay Z just after Staind on the Saturday too(!) Don’t even want to think about what guff I saw instead.
Indeed! Was a bit overwhelmed with the whole performance so can’t really remember how spontaneous the whole thing was but it was certainly a moment.

Just found some footage from someone who was sat a couple of rows back which is pretty good - from about 3 mins in:
Didn’t fully know what was going on at the time as just lost track of him on stage and then in the crowd and the next thing he was up on the big screen with Bobby. Just watching this back properly gives me chills 
Ah that’s amazing. That brought it right back and got the chills too. Even doing this every night, Nick seems properly humbled there.

The original album was a complete mess. The new version is actually pretty good - coherent sounding, decent songs beautifully played and produced. Your tolerance for it will hinge on how much time you have for such self-conscious retro stuff but at least you know what they were trying to do now.

Heard a few tracks of the ‘new’ version, interesting, but it still sounds so flat, not sure what happened on the production.
My favourite era is Vanishing Point/Xterminator just as Mani joined them, I find Bobby’s anti-establishment schtick a bit tiresome these days though.
The production was something they mentioned last week; that the fact it’s so clean and ‘shiney’ might be one of the things that influenced them into binning these tapes in favour of a new set.

When they played XTRMNTR at Shepherd’s Bush empire with Kevin shields playing and death in Vegas supporting. I have no time for any other album but that will always be one of my top ten gigs ever. For that moment; fuck me everything about it was on fire

Apropos of nothing, i’d never heard this Vanishing Point era b-side until this year, and it’s an absolute beauty…
This song is brilliant and also ‘Jesus’ from the same single. I have heard Bobby talk about how ‘Jesus’ & ‘How Does It Feel To Belong’ was the sound they were originally going for on the ballads on ‘Give Out…’
