I wouldnā€™t count a oven pizza as a ready meal, but Iā€™m not 100% sure why. Just seems like a different type of thing (obviously a pizza is a meal for one though)

Just snobbery, innit?

The TL;DR musings:

I think the line is normally drawn at food that we consider ā€˜easyā€™ to make at home. Because of the necessity of proving dough, etc, bread-based meals usually take considerably longer even than something like lasagna.

(Possibly extra layer of snobbery there because readymade pasta is fine, readymade pizzabases arenā€™t seen the same way - but possibly just because of the quality of those foods?)

Supermarket pizzas aside I canā€™t remember the last time I had a ready meal. Weā€™re talking years.

Main reason is because I canā€™t be bothered to trawl through the labels looking for which ones donā€™t have offensive amounts of sugar and, sometimes, salt in them. Iā€™d just rather not bother.

I can tell you: it was when we were having our kitchen done a few weeks ago and only had a microwave. Some M&S ones. They were good.

But the main reason I donā€™t go for them is first the fact that vegetarians tend to be ill-served with variety and second theyā€™re generally aimed at people who are watching their calorie intake. For me they are just far too small a portion so Iā€™d just end up having to supplement with some sandwiches or something.

Oh yeah Iā€™m sure there are perfectly good ones - I just donā€™t have any need to eat them these days, I really donā€™t, so canā€™t be bothered to look.

I used to get a Macaroni Cheese one from Tesco and grate a shitload of extra cheese into it. Those were the days my friend.

For some reason, I draw the line at whether they can be cooked in a microwave, and not if they have to be cooked in the oven or on the hob.

I went through a period of working long hours in the office and itā€™s so annoying to find meals that look quite nice, but canā€™t be done in a microwave.

Sainsburyā€™s used to do a lovely roast vegetable and pasta dish with cheese and breadcrumb topping, which was my go to meal but they stopped selling it for some reason.

I find the sainsburys posh ones to be pretty OK

When Iā€™m on my own the price to effort ratio vs proper cooking is pretty hard to beat.

I like getting the chilli and rice - having it with some oven chips maybe, Grated chedder and Cholula on top

Or the lasagna with some oven chips

Yeah Iā€™m the opposite - microwave ones make me feel a bitā€¦ funny. Donā€™t know why.

However Iā€™m sure Iā€™d reverse this opinion if I was met with the same circumstances as you in this instance. When needed Iā€™ll eat literally most things.
