Pulp/Jarvis - chuck yer best songs at me

#1

Hello.

I tend to listen to Pulp in entire albums at a time, just because with bands that are older my brain reverts to full-record listening just as i did as a kid.

But if you were going to do a best-of from Pulp, let’s say 10 tracks, what would you go with? i will try and build one today but I’m already having trouble trying to distill their essence into that confined a space.

I hate to say it but… I need Royter.

#2

same, i just stick to his n hers, DC, and TIH. His first solo album is great too

#3

I’ve completely ignored their early stuff, as while there’s much to enjoy, it’s really not as good as their later stuff…

Razzmatazz
Babies
Do You Remember the First Time?
Mis-Shapes
Common People
Disco 2000
Sorted for E’s & Wizz
PTA (Parent Teacher Association)
This is Hardcore
Wickerman

Razzmatazz is my favourite song of theirs. Lyrically is spot on too.

#5

His n’ Hers was the soundtrack to a lot of my first year at uni. Great/bad memories of the first year with that album as its soundtrack.

#7

this is extremely close to my own list actually. forgot The Fear

#8

I don’t think Pulp were ever better than when they were on the Gift label. His n Hers is wonderful. I’m not too bothered about Different Class and have never really got into This is Hardcore. I absolutely detest Disco 2000!

Side One

  1. Do You Remember the First Time?
  2. Razzamatazz
  3. Lipgloss
  4. OU
  5. Fairground

Side Two

  3. Pink Glove
  4. Inside Susan

Disco 2000 is shit.

#10

*in comparison to other Pulp. In comparison to other bands of their era, it’s solid.

#11

Pulp are a rarity in that I am still quite fond of the naff stuff, even Disco 2000. Top 10 is hard but at a push

Have you seen her lately?
F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E.

Maybe. I think We Love Life is really underrated but the other stuff is so strong.

#13

Other than Kenickie’s Get In I don’t think the Britpop comedown was down as well as it was on This is Hardcore, even the upbeat songs are grim as fuck

#14

My list is very similar to @roastthemonaspit. So much so that I just copied and pasted it, then made the small adjustments.

I thought this for a long time, but then I saw them play it on their reunion tour, at a secret gig on the Park stage at Glastonbury, and it suddenly sounded like the greatest song ever written. No idea why. Love it now.

#19

Really difficult, as that run of four albums was superb. I’d weigh more heavily on This Is Hardcore and We Love Life than the lists above, but I’m damned if I can narrow it down to ten.

I was always sad that they never managed to nail a studio version of this:

In a true DiS way I’ve always preferred their earlier stuff when they were for the true losers/geeks like me as opposed to their geek chic that they became in their latter albums.
