I think Fawlty Towers and A Fish Called Wanda will always be brilliant regardless of how much nonsense Cleese says/terrible films he’s done since then. Same way that I still like Time Bandits and Brazil and 12 Monkeys even though Gilliam is a perv and a tiresome troll these days

But I mean Around the World in 80 Days was really excellent in its time too. Palin has a lot of reasons to be high on my list (A Fish Called Wanda too). Not exactly sure what your objection is to my post. Cleese has been very funny very often but Palin has been more my dude and in later years Cleese has annoyed me while Palin hadnt

Sorry, I agree that Palin is clearly the best so I shouldn’t be arguing really

Terry Jones is fine isn’t he?

I’m an extra in the “sequel/prequel/equal” to that, the name of which escapes me.

Fierce Creatures?

Watched a Fish Called Wanda for the first time recently. Maybe I missed the boat on it but I didn’t think it very good.

That’s the one!

Not seen either

Michael Palin reminds me of my dad the most, and seems a good egg all round. I used to really like watching him go round the world in various fashions - for some reason him being in the rainiest place in the world in Chile is the one that sticks out the most.

Terry Jones has a neurodegenerative disease, and apparently can’t really speak at all any more… :frowning:

Shameless plug here as I work for the publisher, but Michael Palin’s diaries from the 70s/80s/90s are really interesting reads about Monty Python (his entry on Graham Chapman’s death is very moving) and the handful of films he did. Also I found out after reading his 90s diaries that he was in You Got Mail but they cut out his role completely in post-production. The swines!

I love the diaries I’ve read. I have The Python Years and Travelling to Work (signed!) but not yet got Halfway to Hollywood, which I’m sure will be equally (if not more) fascinating.

That’s neat that you work for the publisher, have you ever bumped into him there?

He’s come in in the past and been at events etc, but I always felt too self conscious to ever talk to him. Alas he’s now with another publisher anyway!

Speaking of which, this abridged reading of his new Erebus book (if that’s of interest to anyone here) is available for the rest of today:

Hoping to find time to listen to that this afternoon.

yeah someone on a podcast who i really like was banging on about how amazing it was the other day and how it deserved its Oscars and I was completely baffled having seen it about a year ago

(can’t remember the person but remember being confused/disappointed)

I must have seen that film 10 or 15 times.

Actually tbf Kevin Kline is fantastic in it so no begrudging his Oscar from me. Other than that - wasn’t bothered.
