Quincy Jones RIP

Ah, fuck.

One of those silly careers that you’d roll your eyes at if it was scripted as a film. “He played with Elvis, Malcolm X sold him drugs, he hung out with Picasso, Princess Grace of Monaco asked him to work with Frank Sinatra, he produced the best-sellling album of all time, he made a beloved sitcom etc etc”. Forrest Gump-ass life.

Amazing guy. I shall be playing I Dig Dancers in memoriam. As @hip_young_gunslinger says, he was just there for it all. Feels like a not insubstantial chunk of history has gone with him.

One of the heavyweights of 20th century music. What a career.

RIP

What a man, what a career. Let’s hope he doesn’t end up pigeonholed as the guy who did Big Band Bossa Nova

R.I.P. Quincy Jones u wuld have loved when MF DOOM sampled this on ‘Rhymes Like Dimes’ twenty-five years before you died.

Er…I stand by my video post above. It was a fine tune for over 30 years before Mike Myers got hold of it.

Anyway, he’s getting predictably pigeon-holed as Michael Jackson’s producer.

I’m far too busy pigeonholing him myself as the guy who signed New Order for the US Market to have noticed that

This is a great episode about Thriller and breaking down Quincy’s arrangement for the song. The guy was special.

RIP.

This soundtrack is also great…

Give yourself 20 minutes and read this. Every time you think it can’t get madder, it does.

Mrs Rec is predictably sad today. He would have been her Msstermind specialist subject.

She was only going on about him the other night.
Over the years she’s told me so much crazy stuff about him that i was like, that can’t be right, but no, it always was.

The netflix doc on U.S.A For Africa is well worth a watch for QJ trying to produce 30 of the biggest stars in the world all at the same time.

this is also worth a watch, nothing amazing but fun to see Quincy still being as irreverent as ever in his old age

Just an absolute titan wasn’t he. Shaped popular music and culture for what, 70+ years? Wild.
