if you’re enjoying that you should check out the albums of the same era (Brix era) and go from there
I bought Way to Blue but then soon realised that I had to have the 3 albums. ( I know Black Eyed Dog is on a rareties CD )
Don’t play the compilation anymore.
precisely this.
No one mentioned Staring at the Sea yet?
Eponymous (REM)
Probably doesn’t really fit ‘quintessential’ but I’ve somehow managed to let Mogwai pass me by over the years and now really enjoy Central Belters.
Same here for Way to Blue - I’m pretty sure that was the main way Nick Drake got rediscovered more generally, and the albums only got cd reissues after the success of Way to Blue. Cld be wrong but certainly anyone I knew who knew ND did so initially through WTB.
by which I mean Standing on a Beach… and yes it has been mentioned. Top post
No, you were right and I was wrong. Standing On a Beach was the video compilation released at the same time. Essentially the same thing I suppose.
Oh, christ. Seems it was called both. My cd is ‘Staring’ but that’s because it’s German. As you were.
You know in my head it was always called Staring at the Sea but I never owned it just a cassette copied from a friend. Just assumed I was wrong but weirdly I could have been right…probably not though.
I’m pretty sure mine is called Standing in the Sea
Hall & Oates - Rock n Soul, Greatest Hits Part 1 The Pocket Galaxie 500
Standing on a Beach was the cassette version. Staring at the Sea was the name given to the CD release as well as to the video compilation.
The cassette version, btw, had all the b-sides on the flip side, while the CD release has a couple of extra (non-single) tracks.
I’ve got a Lynyrd Skynyrd 7" with Freebird on one side and Sweet Home Alabama on the other. I like to think of it as the Best Of Lynyrd Skynyrd.
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones - Wigs Fallen Off! (Best Of)
Got the tape version. Some great stuff on that b-sides set. Possibly one of the great cassette greatest hits comps.
Decade by Neil Young
On triple vinyl, of course
The very best of Steely Dan. Gonna listen to it now actually
Buzzcocks - Singles Going Steady
I’m not sure I really need to listen to their albums. It stands as an essential piece of work by itself.
