kinda surprising they were already headlining in 97 actually given that they would have been booked on the basis of The Bends and Creep before anyone knew how how big OK Computer would get. was it just less of a massive festival back then? the stage does look a lot smaller
Headliners were weird back in the 90s and earlier for Glasto. Pretty sure Ash headlined it with just 1977 under their belts.
Yeah, they replaced Steve Winwood the night after Radiohead
that’s mad. from headlining Glastonbury to playing the Oh Yeah Centre
Big step up for them Tbf that Ash 20 gig at Oh Yeah was fucking brilliant. And where’s Winwood now eh? Bet he’s never done a tour of carparks the chump!
Ginger Baker headlined? Fair play to Roy Harper tho: “Baker caused an almighty ruckus by setting up his equipment while the previous act, folk-rocker Roy Harper, was still playing. Understandably miffed, Harper confronted him and the two ended up scrapping on-stage. According to an eyewitness account on UK Rock Festivals, the crowd then pelted Baker with bottles during his set, with one hitting him square on the forehead.”
this St Gallen show is good anyway
TBF, Pulp were a much smaller band when they headlined in 1995. Yeah, they were a last-minute stand-in, but still, with one top 10 album and one brand-new mega single to show for more than a decade of slogging, they were a pretty outre choice
Thank fuck! Thought they’d forgot
Actually no I jumped the gun. Will they or won’t they
Hahaha trying to figure out what you might’ve confused with it here
Think I just had it in my head they w e the gonna do it then when they changed for Bloom I convinced myself and typed before they’d played a note.
living absolutely rent free in our heads
Sometimes it’s the nicest place to be in fairness
Remember the time the national played Sorrow for 6 hours non stop. Imagine Radiohead did that with The Gloaming.
I just shuddered at the thought
And no Gloamings were given. What a time to be alive.
Yeah but that was clearly an anomaly - I only went once (in 1998) and if you look at the line up then it was all massive bands of that time (some of whom became much more massiver) and the site was gigantic by then. It was hardly a small affair. Granted the size of the stages and the crowds are on another level these days by the look (been a dedicated sofa watcher for years now and wouldn’t have it any other way)
Skunk Anansie headlined in 1999. Skunk Anansie
