It can often not be specific recommendations or rave reviews but hearing a band’s name regularly mentioned here definitely means my ears prick up if I see it in the wider world or touring live. DiS seal of approval if you like. (Similarly mass dissent = avoid). I certainly remember not having the Menzingers on my radar at all until I saw them talked about here a lot, I just thought they were a really run of the mill pop punk band. Enough of a nudge to check them out and I am now a firm fan. Tons of bands have come through from the emo and heavy music threads too.

Yep - have tried to knock lots of my internet usage on the head - especially message boards - but DiS seems to be a constant. Weird that my main source of new rap music is an indie forum.

Have been hipped to loads and loads of great music here.

Just scrolling through my Spotify saved albums and see…

Sennen
Skee Mask
Deaf Center
Lord Apex
Cities Aviv
Loads of Miles Davis albums…
No Comment
All those Aphex Twins albums that someone compile from all the Soundcloud stuff…

And loads more.

Yes! I lurk in that thread a bit and have found some gems, including that.

The big one for me this year is Satomimagae which is very much an AOTY contender and completely up my street, but not something I’ve come across anywhere else.

Just checking my spreadsheet of bands I discover, and I think @stickboy might be in the lead of the bands that I actually buy music from. He’s lead to me purchasing albums from Delmer Darion, Elephant Micah, and Sam Skinner over the past year.

Also last year I found and loved Alexandra Savior because of @BMS1, and Sevdaliza because of @shrewbie

and Austra from a few people last year too!

Way too many to list and sort through, so I’ll just go with the first three that come to mind that haven’t been mentioned yet.

Palm Haze
Still completely obsessed with this. Melodic, fuzzed out, propulsive shoegaze with some trip-hop elements thrown in. Never goes into that “generic shoegaze” zone. The songs are there and they’re exciting.

One of the very best songs of last decade:

An all-time great first half / second half fake-out.

Their debut EP was really good too. Here’s a kind of unsettling sounding one.

Midwife

Beautiful, miserable, and soft but heavy. Like a fusion of CODY-era Mogwai and Blissed and Gone style Pumpkins being beamed from outer space. Everything she does is great.

Holy Fawn

A fusion of heavy, melodic shoegaze and post-rock (but way more massive and unique than that description) that somehow has the similar ethereal qualities of Midwife.

One of the very best songs of 2020. Like a slow wave overwhelming you.

A great fast one, maybe my favorite of theirs.

Love how floaty this one is:

Protomartyr is the big one for me. Turned up early to see them on a joint headline tour on someone here’s recommendation and loved them in about two notes.

Also big shout out due to @Brainfreeze for organising the Music League which means I have heard so much new stuff I would never had found anywhere else. Have added more to my library in last few months than I have for years.

Now with a link, which I realise was actually the point of the thread. :man_facepalming:

The main way I discover new music is through the Friday threads so there’s hundreds.

3 bands that I adore now and really made an effort to like because they have their own threads are:

Daughters
Big Thief
Protomartyr

Also a huge shout to the album of the month threads too

They’re so good. Everyone should try them if they haven’t already, here’s one from each release:

This one wouldn’t be out of place next to Wolf Parade’s Dinner Bells. Pretty and sad and magical.

Can’t quite explain why but there’s something Jimmy Eat World about this one. Fast and loud, love how the chorus escalates.

Just a great song, there’s something very affecting about it.

They really are.
Would like to see them live when possibly.
They seem like a nice bunch too.

Soo many, but my favourite 3: built to spill, big star, the replacements. Listening to music was soo much more enjoyable because of dis, between 2008-2011ish I would definitely have counted listening to music/discovering new music/going to live music shows as my #1 hobby and that was thanks to dis <3

Chika - excellent, positive, upbeat hip hop from @Jamos in music league

Bob Vylan - aggressive, angry mix of punk and grime from @Rolley1982 again in music league

Sex Swing - when I asked for recommendations in the Heavy Music thread

Great thread. So many bands my fellow Disers have turned me onto, but stand outs are:

Old bands with great catalogues: Nothing and There Will Fireworks.

New acts with drop dead awesome records this year: Arooj Aftab and maria bc.

Gonna be chasing down Palm Haze and Midwife for a listen tonight.

Keep spreading the love(ly music) xxxx
