It’s very funny, and it’s largely true too. A really good look at the world I’m in.
For ballet:
Super well researched, very well written, a real tour of how ballet began, grew and shifted in style over the years. Academic levels of research with a love for the subject.
The first faithful reproduction of the totally incomprehensible Voynich manuscript. Comes with good explanations of the history and some attempts at interpretation.
Even this revised edition’s over 20 years old now, and lots has been discovered in that time to make it outdated in parts. But it’s still a wonderful survey of the field with lots of illustrations & photos.
Trans-Europe Express by Owen Hatherly. Really interesting look at how history and politics have shaped architecture in cities across Europe. Chapters on Porto to Stockholm to Lviv and everywhere in between, including a chapter called “In Praise of Hull.” Written in quite a spiky, humourous style. Highly recommended!
