I love the Record Cafe but itā€™s definitely more of a bar with a bit of a record shop, than the other way round.

Went to Wellingtonā€™s best record store (Slow Boat, obviously) and watched a couple of local bands. Picked up the new CD by one of them (Teeth, a Phoenix Foundation side project) and a Paul Kelly record. Wasnā€™t anything much of interest in terms of actual RSD releases, though I was tempted by the Lou Reed live - was it any good, @cutthelights?

It did. I remember going to a record fair a week after that rsd and some nincompoop was try to sell the butcher for Ā£70-Ā£80 odd. It didnā€™t have a price tag, so I had to ask for this information. I was pretty smug in my response, stating I was fine in my inclination to wait a few weeks and purchase it off wastedotcom. unfortunately he knew his business and slapped me with some undeniable collectors pressing information, which I would have listened to, had I not already have been walking off laughing

I got one but now Iā€™m annoyed because the ā€˜book boxā€™ thing, while very nice, isnā€™t Ā£46 nice and Iā€™d be just as happy with a standard edition. My fault for not checking beforehandā€¦

I went to Wah Wah Records in Wakefield (a great little treasure troves for new and second hand vinyl). Wasnā€™t bothered about the crazy expensive RSD official releases so headed there in the afternoon saw a couple of instore sets. Picked up a couple of 7"s including The Oriellesā€™ Space Doubt which Iā€™ve been trying to find for a while. Then went for a pint in the sun. Decent afternoon and great to see the shop nice and busy.

Whilst I get the whole support the independent record shop thing RSD is a bit of a Xmas style farce. You have to get up far to early and you may still get beaten to what you want. Sure itā€™s great to see record shops busy but most other times they are totally empty staving off being put out of business.
Maybe all vinyl should be limited to the sale and size of the respective artist i.e a run of 1000. These releases should be initial releases and re-issues should be held back on. This should apply all year round to keep the shops alive. A copy of This Is Hardcore (Pulp) from the 90ā€™s on vinyl would set you back over Ā£100 until a re-issue which will halve that value immediately which seems daft. Good to see people digging in the 2nd hand boxes and car boot sales but a RSD Elastica reissue being sold on eBay for around Ā£80 already shows what RSD signifies to most - money.

I went to Spin in Aberdeen at 2:30pm, had a couple of beers and a pizza and then went upstairs. Didnā€™t even ask about the exclusives and bought an old Buddy Rich LP as I wanted it.

There was something taped to the counter about RSD releases coming in later and, even though Copper Blue was on the list, I just couldnā€™t be arsed to buy a record Iā€™ve heard hundreds of times before again.

Itā€™s great to see record shops busy, but really failing to see the point in these expensive re-issues.

has anyone taken everyone buying stuff just sells them on ebay yet?

people I was in the queue with were buying for their own use only, same as me
got all the ones I wanted, the original elastica release is more than the rsd one & had been wanting that for a while, so pleased to see that crop up, as with previous years with life without buildings, the midnight organ flight & 14 autumns getting repressed
would they have been repressed without this? maybe, weā€™ll never know
one thing I do know is that my local shop broke their previous best takings in one day record & if that keeps them going instead of people buying online then itā€™s worth everything

I think itā€™s a great thing too, but I canā€™t understand the queuing up for major re-issues (which probably says more about my tastes than anything else_ and, hereā€™s another annual moan but one I think is valid: It really, really blocks up the pressing plants to the detriment of smaller labels who get pushed to the back of the queue for their regular releases because Ed Sheeran needs a picture disc in a hurry.

Yeah, youā€™re right - still a bit frustrating though!
Loads of The Cure and Manics releases on eBay, but itā€™s looking like the silly priced ones arenā€™t selling, so hopefully theyā€™ll be reasonably priced very soon.
