Not that interested in the reissues etc but always enjoy the live music- saw Lovely Eggs and The Oreilles last night who were both excellent.

will it create enough area for a DiS kickabout?

I was flying back from Seattle yesterday. When my father-in-law picked me up at the airport and mansplained Record Store Day to me, he seemed disapointed that I slagged it off.

Has anyone had a good time on Record Store Day?

Yes.

When was it? What did you enjoy about it?

I had a crackin’ day out on Saturday. Went to the day VoxBox were running in Edinburgh. They’d acquired the use of a pub across the street and had loads of good bands on. Great weather so lots of drinking out on the pavement between acts. No bawbags. Few dogs there too.

Picked up the Parquet Courts 7inch which I’ve been enjoying. Labels are taking the piss with some of the prices and “exclusives” but it is what it is. Good day out and the shops seem to do well from it so it’s fine with me.

Downside was that there seemed to be less cake than in previous years :-1:

Put it together with the Mars Voltas and I reckon

Yep, was there too. Shame they didn’t have use of The Last Word this year - nothing wrong with the 'Tiq for the bands, just felt a bit odd without the two.

Cracking day, though - forgotten quite how much I like Book Group and the TV was quite pleased to get a perfect line of sight for Carla J Easton thanks to toddler alley, seeing as she’s only a couple of inches taller than your average three-year-old.

Some turn out for Kathryn Joseph, though, wasn’t it?

Aye, rammed! Definitely couldn’t see her but I like that most people just shut up and she sounded lovely.

Was really cool to see the young kids there for most of the day enjoying it and being well behaved.

Did you catch Super Inuit? Thought they were class.

Sadly, no - we got in just as they were wrapping up their last one. Would have found it a bit odd watching them, though - Brian used to produce my old Edinburgh Uni radio show (most energetic I’ve seen him, to be honest) and Fern’s my friend’s sister.

Still would have heckled them, like.

Was thinking about the 'Tiq yesterday, as it goes - would be good to see VoxBox put on some more stuff in there rather than do the tiny in-stores, maybe a couple of bands on a Saturday afternoon a month or something. Should get Darren to use his shady gangland record shop connections to make it so.

Easy to be super cynical about all of this, and for much of the release schedule (reissue after reissue after reissue) that cynicism is warranted - but I still really think it’s pretty great. Given everything these days is immediately available to everyone all the time, it’s nice that there’s this once a year event where there is some level of exclusivity to it.

I wanted the SURVIVE one, Sufjan, The National, Sigur Ros and Kevin Sheilds/Eno thing. Managed to get three of 'em.
