Firstly, don’t worry, it would be hard to find threads like the Mclusky one, which one need to be deleted manually and I love that thread and never would.

I’m going to get rid of some really old selfie threads and see if it makes any difference.

has something happened to gifs? been some (very funny) tiny giffing the last couple of days

(obviously gifs are not very space efficient anyway)

I reduced upload limits to 1meg and not to download images from elsewhere to our server, so it’s maybe compressing them?

I’ve worked with @discourse and managed to reduce some of our storeage but we’re still right at limit

Want me to delete old selfie threads etc, as has been discussed before?

Yeah, I think deleting those will be a big help. As long as you don’t think people will kick off?

Nope I think it’ll be fine. I’ll look into it in the next few days :slightly_smiling_face:

You should delete the music you’ve been listening to thread, that thing has hundreds of pictures in it.
It might help.

TBH you could really do with a breakdown for this. Is there a way to get the details of the threads that are taking the most size?

Us just guessing random threads based on images is probably not the best idea.

I assume there isn’t a lower tier storage option you can really aim for so we’re looking at just bringing it down 10-20GB to give us some overhead so if we find there’s like one monster thread causing it all (it’s gonna be the Simpsons one isn’t it?) then we might just kill that and we’ll be fine.

It is a bit confusing isn’t it. I’m also surprised I can’t just compress images in the archive or something.

Two questions:

  • Can you zap anything in social that’s not been replied to in over X months?
  • Does discourse ALWAYS upload images to itself rather than just hotlinking?

Maybe but images from the internet are small files compared to images from your camera roll so some picture threads are gonna take up a lot more space than others

The answer to the first one is yes - It’s in the other thread I think that @wewerewerewolvesonce pointed out threads left for a certain amount of time can be auto-deleted.

The problem is if we decide some threads are worth keeping (again, big discussion).

And yes, hotlinking isn’t good so Discourse doesn’t do it as standard. I’m not sure you can stop that. You can possibly force stuff to appear at hyperlinks though (maybe that’s what you mean) rather than previewing.

Hotlinking probably isn’t what I meant then. Like… if I find an image on, say, bigexpensivebikes dotcom and want to show it in the cycling thread, does Discourse always download the image from the URL I post, and upload it to DiS’s servers, in my reply, rather than just inserting it?

(Is that hotlinking?)

Just “inserting it” is hotlinking.

It’s considered bad form because it means you’re expecting someone else to pay for the bandwidth costs that you’re creating.

DiS downloads a copy and uploads to its own server to act as a “good citizen” of the internet.
