Every time I need to do anything with regex, I google that shit and hope to fuck someone has already done the thing I wanted to do with it.

Anyone here actually good enough to construct this shit themselves?

  • I’m pretty good at it
  • I can do some basic things
  • I know very little
  • Without Google I’m totally fucked and the things I copy and paste might as well be hieroglyphics

We’ve a guy in my work nicknamed Reggie because he’s the only one that can do uncomplicated ones without googling. Anything complex and he’s the same as the rest of us though.

Decided to try and work it out on my own this morning. Ended up taking the entire morning to do something simple and swearing wildly most of the time. Don’t know how I’m going to explain why it took so long. Ah fuck it, just pad out another task.

Used to be better cos I suffered from not invented here syndrome which meant I had to do it myself, cba so much these days

Glad I’ve never suffered from this. Much more of a fan of “keep googling it till I find someone who’s done something vaguely similar then amend it slightly to make it work like I want syndrome”

That’s reasonable though. I don’t mind tidying it up a bit, it’s the logic that’s the hard thing.

I can write regexes (and I happily use them for static text manipulation in files/text editors), but I worry every time I see them in code because there’s almost always a better, clearer way of doing the same thing. They’re basically write-only, and as code is written as much for the next programmer to read as it is for the compiler to build, they’re a bad smell to me.
