Hopelessly sad news. There’s something particularly poignant and bleak about the world, in its current especially fucked up state, losing such a pure soul. RIP.

sad news. someone i’ve dipped into a few times and enjoyed but never given a full exploration to. like others, it’s the myriad of artists who’ve covered him that were my main intro.

as it happens, i recently rediscovered that old site Daytrotter that always posted great live sessions. used to love it about a decade ago, but it disappeared behind a paywall for quite a few years. discovered a couple of weeks ago that everything is now hosted on the Paste website and is freely downloadable again. just last night i went on a big trawl of the archives to find some old favourites and some hidden gems. one that i came across was a Daniel Johnston session from 2010 featuring, unusually, a whole 7 tracks. downloaded it last night along with a load of other stuff, was looking forward to checking it out at some stage soon. giving it a first spin now and it’s great.

here it is if anyone’s interested:

Def one of my favourites. So great. A friend of mine had the lyrics read out as a ‘reading’ at his wedding.

Ah fuck that’s really sad.

RIP Daniel. Not thinking of what is lost but what is left behind. A truly unique songwriter and artist:

Never understood how someone that had faced the challenges he did could write something as delicate and beautiful as this. RIP.

Utterly gutted, big part of my late teens / early twenties and into more ‘alternative’ music in general. Astounding songwriting and one of those guys who could bottle a single thought or melody and make it seem unique and huge. And everything was just so him. Even named an art’s club in school after this tune:

I’ve listened to the Sparklehorse + Flaming Lips cover so many times, but it was nice to listen to the original again.

never heard Life in Vain before watching that video earlier. the album version is great too. wow.

Another great American songwriter gone. These are dark days indeed.

Start each day with a clean slate
You’ll feel better if you can shake off all that hate
And don’t forget to forgive and forget
Don’t let the sun go down on your grievances

A nice story here from Leagues, who brought Daniel to Ireland in the late 2000s.
