When I was a wee teenage metal snob, The Frames was one of the bands that my friends were listening to that managed to cut through. Fair bit of nostalgia tied up in those songs.
Just reading the posts above, didn’t really follow him outside of The Frames so I’m one of the ones surprised by the noncery

Weren’t there stories about him giving out burner phones to young women? Sounded pretty unsavoury. Also there was a period when I was living in Dublin that Revelate seemed to be the only song any pub was allowed to play. Brings me out in hives to this day.

The Frames were quite a formative band for teenage me, I remember buying their live album Set List what must be almost exactly 20 years ago actually. Listened to it an enormous amount before picking up some of the studio albums.
Was a lot less interested in his solo material or Swell Season stuff so drifted away from him a bit, friends used to go to a lot of his solo gigs but I didn’t really both and only went to one in Derry for my birthday in 2019 (the album he was touring had a banger of an opener compared to the rest of his solo stuff), was hit and miss and my main memory is the crowd chatting an unbearable amount. Think he had another Belfast show coming up this year which I wasn’t gonna bother with.
Heard some of the grim rumours in recent years about him being a creep which also put me off him and kept him at arms length a bit, in light of that I felt a little bit guilty going to see The Frames again in 2023 when they did an outdoor summer gig 5 minutes from my house - but selfishly I had a great time and also selfishly I’m kinda glad I saw them play all the old bangers for what turned out be one last time.
I expected that some day all that stuff would come out and there would be a bit of a career-ending public reckoning but really didn’t expect the career-ender to be a shock death like this. Quite an odd mix of emotions really.
before you updated this post i assumed this was a story from the 70s or something as i’d never heard of this guy. wtf!!
I think getting into The Frames, Bell X1, Damien Rice etc as a teenager was sorta the beginning stages of me getting really into Irish music which would go on to become my entire personality

Haha, I drifted away from all of those artists within a couple of years, although The Frames remained the one of those I’d continue to go and see live.
Wasn’t really sure why he shifted from making Frames records to solo records but it had the advantage that it kept all the new material out of the band setlists
