RIP Martin Phillipps (The Chills)

Sad. The track linked is an absolute all timer.

Interviewed him about a decade back and seemed like a genuinely lovely bloke.

Low-key genius, in that way where someone may drift in and out of your memory, but each time you remember them being accompanied with a realisation of “Oh yeah, pretty incredible”. Pink Frost is the obvious canonical pick for NZ rock, but I love this one a little bit more.

This is my Bowie/Cobain moment. I’m in bits. I’m so glad I got to see him for a final time last year and that he was able to finally remix and reissue ‘Brave Words’. I chatted with him a few times and he was always kind and generous. RIP Martin.

I think that this may be his final interview - it sounds like there will be a final album.

Shame.

So much of that Dunedin/Flying Nun stuff is brilliant. Dunno, there’s just something quite vintage about it to my ears and a particular aesthetic to it that I find very enduring.

There’s a clear lineage there in my head from classic sixties bands, to my favourite punk and post-punk bands, through NZ bands, into the best nineties/noughties guitar music.

Almost nobody I’ve ever mentioned bands of that era to seems aware of them either, and they almost all love them right off the bat. You got me into those bands, if memory serves. Thanks for that.

Think it was i-could-be-in-your-band(?) from very old DiS that got me into all that stuff. Massively formative years for the stuff I still listen to today.

Yeah it’s kind of the missing link between almost everything in indie rock, especially when you get to the more out there experimental stuff like Marie and the Atom (sampled by Hood and iirc sound a bit like what Gastr del Sol and ppl like that would do)

And bands like the Bats evoke that 60s sound so strongly without feeling like just pastiche. Much closer to like REM, kind of using post punk as a jumping off point to explore other reference points

“If I’m around in 10 years, I think I’ll be very lucky” - Martin Phillipps, November 2014

Awful news.

A nice piece from Peter Paphides, I expect that there will be similar to follow from Stuart Lee.

My favourite burger restaurant in town has Pink Frost on their playlist and it takes me by surprise every time it comes on

Fantastic stuff.

Oh no. Had no idea, that’s really upset me.
Genius guy. The recent stuff was equally great, especially Silver Bullets.
There’s a film which came out a couple of years back about him and The Chills. Might see if I can track it down.

Unsurprisingly I have a copy of the DVD, it’s well worth a watch.
