RIP Roy Ayers

A true jazz funk legend. Was supposed to see him at Cross the Tracks a couple of years back, but had to cancel because he had covid. Was always hoping i’d get to see him another time, but alas :pensive:

Ah man, what a catalogue.

Yeah, it always feel cheap to run straight towards an artist’s most famous song in these situations, but this is an incredible track. It still doesn’t sound like anything else.

Remember this absolute banger being re-released on 12" as part of Polydor trying to cash in on the rare groove craze in the late 80s / early 90s.

I can add myself to the list of ‘didn’t see him because of Covid’. He was supposed to play Margate in 2020 but the whole festival was cancelled, then I think he cancelled for the rearranged 2022 version because of Covid as well.

He played a pub in my small home town in 2015, in their approx 200 capacity back room. I didn’t go because the tickets were something like £60 and the sound quality could be variable in that place and I thought I might begrudge the cost.

Searching also another classic

R.I.P. to a legend. Saw him in Cork in a small venue in 2013(?) and he was fucking great, constant solos.

One of my favourite tracks of his right here.

I think this is maybe my favourite too, but mine are all skewed towards ones that I found via being sample.

Love how they used this loop.
