I only said a bit of a genius @sprinkles!
I take your point completely. I suffer the burden of being massively hard to please. The explosion of accessibility in making, distributing and listening to music has brought with it the challenge of finding stuff that is anything other than perfectly OK. Thatās as true, for me at least, in my favoured genres so wonderfully explored in this thread.
I have to search quite hard for ambient/drone that excites me. Much of the stuff I listen to, including some smashing recs on here, is āfineā, perfectly well made and executed. But it doesnāt hit me and my desire to listen again (even once more) is not that frequent. Iāll caveat that with, of course, no expectation that the music I will end up loving the most is an instant āhitā - maybe thatās better articulated by saying that I pretty much instantly know that this particular record wonāt be a grower. No seed or kernel there for meā¦
With Rival Consoles, I think heās more talented than, maybe, you do. His orchestrations, melodies, chord lines and hooks are, for me, very often a cut above. You mention JH/FP/MC - to be fair, thatās just three artists in a broadening church, and they are pretty much top of the pile! I donāt see RC as derivative of them, but for me he sits very much alongside them. And, as a techno-obsessive, heās a bit more ravey than, say, Max Cooper.
So, the new record is, for me, a bit special. Yes, heās got that banger-into-more ambient model going that is beloved of Hopkins and Shepherd, but the way he weaves this short record together is a bit of a treat for me.
