Bedouin is a great label, the home to the magnificent Hades by Constantine.

This sounds great - another thanks for the heads-up.

Hi people – been lurking here for a while & finally have something to contribute & say hello!

This here drone-y/ambient album’s based on field recordings taken from a North Wales quarry. Been listening on repeat the last few nights to distract myself from the sweltering London weather

As @NeilYoung says, welcome to the thread!

Thanks for a brilliant rec - that Llyn Y Cwn record is right up my street! BUT - your link seems to have changed to a different record since I clicked on it earlier! What happened?!

The ā€˜Quarry’ record is bloody ace. Really moody and atmospheric. I know that the artist suggests this as going-to-sleep music, but for me this is perfect walking around a city at night soundtrack. Really excellent.

@NeilYoung @bennyhana thanks for the welcome!

Glad you enjoyed the album! – the link hasn’t changed for me. It’s still going to ā€œDinorwicā€.

Gah!

Now the link has changed BACK to the original Bandcamp page. W E I R D!!

Anyway, just about to buy the album, so thanks again!

With apologies for another in my occasional series of drifting slightly off-genres in this, the thread of threads…

…is anyone else pretty blown away by how good the new Rival Consoles record is? I mean, we know Ryan is a bit of a genius, but this record is short, tight and just brilliant. Might be the best thing he’s done so far for me.

ā€˜Genius’ is a bit strong, imo. It’s decent but it draws way too heavily from the Hopkins/Floating Points/Cooper/polite Guardian-tronica sound pallette and doesn’t really have that much of its own identity. I dunno if it’s just because there’s so many people doing this sort of sound right now, but it felt a bit faceless to me.

I only said a bit of a genius @sprinkles!

I take your point completely. I suffer the burden of being massively hard to please. The explosion of accessibility in making, distributing and listening to music has brought with it the challenge of finding stuff that is anything other than perfectly OK. That’s as true, for me at least, in my favoured genres so wonderfully explored in this thread.

I have to search quite hard for ambient/drone that excites me. Much of the stuff I listen to, including some smashing recs on here, is ā€˜fine’, perfectly well made and executed. But it doesn’t hit me and my desire to listen again (even once more) is not that frequent. I’ll caveat that with, of course, no expectation that the music I will end up loving the most is an instant ā€˜hit’ - maybe that’s better articulated by saying that I pretty much instantly know that this particular record won’t be a grower. No seed or kernel there for me…

With Rival Consoles, I think he’s more talented than, maybe, you do. His orchestrations, melodies, chord lines and hooks are, for me, very often a cut above. You mention JH/FP/MC - to be fair, that’s just three artists in a broadening church, and they are pretty much top of the pile! I don’t see RC as derivative of them, but for me he sits very much alongside them. And, as a techno-obsessive, he’s a bit more ravey than, say, Max Cooper.

So, the new record is, for me, a bit special. Yes, he’s got that banger-into-more ambient model going that is beloved of Hopkins and Shepherd, but the way he weaves this short record together is a bit of a treat for me.

I agree with a lot of what you both have said tbh

Obviously good and fine that these folks are popular even if I find them bland myself, but I do enjoy the ā€œpolite Guardian-tronica sound palletteā€ description here.

Just spent a dreamy, slightly-hungover hour or so drifting through the cosmos to the sound of ASC & Sam KDC’s latest. It’s a bit of a stunner, this one.

Giving this record which @almal100 mentioned upthread a listen this morning now that the whole album is out:

and it’s a really nice listen. It flows along fairly steadily without any huge change in dynamics, but there’s something really captivating about it… it feels like one of those records that opens up a space you can wander into. Definitely going on the repeat listen list.

Highly recommend The Long String Instrument if you haven’t heard it.

Anyone else a fan of Motionfield? Only a recent discovery for me but I’m really enjoying the A Clear Horizon album from last year. Moody stuff. Spacious ambient with occasional little IDM flourishes, rhythmic clicks and pulses, that sort of thing.

Giving The Long String Instrument a go this morning and it’s fantastic! There’s something really compelling about the sound; I feel like I could listen to it for hours.

Yep it’s one of those albums for me, sort of record you can just leave on repeat.

Very, very excited about this record purely on the basis of the two tracks available so far. This is the sort of composition that I adore. She appears to be one talented lady.

I’m trying desperately to convince myself to buy this only on digital and not on vinyl. My wax purchasing is getting a bit silly :grimacing:
