Very sorry gang, definitely not ambient by any means but was just checking out sound clips from an upcoming dnb release on one of my fave labels and imagine my surprise at the sample
SUB - strata, am I right
Oh yeah, this hits the spot. Gorgeous.
Got tickets for this today, will be my first gig of the year.
Also going to the Cute Exhibition at Somerset House that day which should be a fun contrast.
I missed Spettri at the time, but it was released on Apple Music recently, think it’s one of the best Cortini releases I’ve heard now.
New Andrew Tasselmyer is amazing. More rhythmic than his usual output
Yeah, this is nice, fairly business as usual up til track 3, then we get the Quique-era-esque percussive joy that is ‘Flowers in a storm’. Lovely.
This is a very enjoyable way to spend 15 minutes.
London-based composer using reel-to-reel machines, tape echoes and analogue synthesisers.
No Bristol this year
Sounds possibly like an extension of the Night Tracks & Unclassified vibe. Which are excellent listens btw.
Radio 3 will also get a new station to focus on calming classical music, aimed at helping listeners “unwind, de-stress and escape the pressures of daily life”.
A Sun Ammisa New album sounding great!!
Previews on veil of sound.
In going through some 2023 ambient/drone playlists, stumbled upon this absolute beauty of a record. Blissful, simmering, ambient/drone.
Finally got to see boy wonder KMRU on Saturday in the Barbican Hall.
Firstly, the sound in the venue is off the scale good - almost as/as good as the Symphony Hall in Birmingham, which is breathtaking.
The seats are comfortable and the banking on all the levels means that there are only good views of the stage. They dimmed the lights to almost nothing and so KMRU played his set in near darkness most of the time, which was perfect for the enveloping, immersive set, the only light into the entire auditorium coming from the big screen projections, which were ever changing, swirling black and gold abstract patterns, controlled by another guy stood next to him, on a designated laptop. It was really nice to know that the visuals were being manipulated and chosen in real time to complement the tracks.
Joseph’s 40 minute set was just phenomenal. It flew by, with the standout track being the title track of Dissolution Grip, a track he’d promised me he would play when I tweeted him a week or two ago . He got a fantastic response at the end and seemed very touched by the crowd’s appreciation.
Alessandro came on after a very civilised 20 minute interval and he too played a continuous 40 minute set, again with very nice screen visuals. His set was superb as well, tho this biased fan just gave the win to KMRU by a whisker! So pleased to have seen him at last, he did not disappoint.
And, knowing that there are a few in here that like dance music too, later that night we went to FOLD for the first time (before we also went to fabric ) and I think it’s possibly my favourite club ever. Just a perfect venue for sound (impeccable), crowd, vibe. Can’t wait to go there again.

Great review! I was gutted I couldn’t make that show. I sometimes get tired of shows where all acts are doing the same or very similar things, but from what you described they all absolutely nailed it. Thank the Overlords of Sound for sit down ambient shows
Great review. I thought it was just about the perfect Ambient/Modern Composition/Drone gig. Two masters playing short sets through amazing sound systems, accompanied by gorgeous/confounding abstract visuals. Should be the standard format.
Really enjoyed this rec, @NeilYoung ,thanks!
Especially the third and fourth tracks. Excellent stuff.

Have been a bit frustrated at the seeming dearth of good A/MC/D records so far this year, though that probably reflects more on my not having found them, rather than their non-existence.
With that in mind:

Armbruster’s previous album (Masses) from 2022 was one of my favourites of that year, and I missed that this new one was released last Friday. Masses was quite ‘clean’ but echoed Rachels in a lot of ways, this new one is scuzzier, more like Simon McCorry or Oliver Coates:
Not sure what we’ve done to deserve Alva Noto doing something that sounds like an 8 minute take on BOC’s Olson. Yet here we are.
Digging that Meg Mulhearn record. Much like you, have not found much in the 2024 vein so far tickling my fancy, so I resort to 2023 records I’m catching up with.
This was nice. Gentle ambiance with modern composition/contemporary classical backdrops. Easy smooth listen.
