I think what cuts me up most is that so many of the lyrics seem to deal, or try to, with putting an awful past behind you and trying to just be a simple good person. The message feels hard won and genuine, and is all the more emotive, resonant and effective for it. It really moved me today.

It could have helped and guided and eased the lives of so many people in these times if it weren’t for all the baggage. Feels like such a waste.

I think I was getting to the point where I felt I could listen to them again a couple of months ago but then I watched Nanette

There’s definitely a few on Devil & God that, in retrospect, you can tell he’s trying to reconcile with some of the questionable shit he’s done. I don’t want to be an apologist but the lyrics, reading between the lines and again with the knowledge of what he’s done, do kind of acknowledge some wrongs… I dunno

I agree with this and feel the same way as I do with a lot of Louis CK’s work in that it feels, in hindsight, like an expression of coming to terms with their flaws and trying to work through it/better themselves.

As with Louis CK though, all of that is really pretty meaningless if you have been able to hide in plain sight and avoid fronting up to anything explicitally whilst continuing to create the art that is in whatever way an attempt at redemption.

And also, it goes without saying, but it completely ignores the victims having to cope with the incidents alongside having to see their abusers succeeding by using their abuse for art.

They were my absolute favourite band, still the band I’ve seen live the most. Haven’t listened to them once since the Jesse Lacey stuff surfaced, fuck them tbh. The rest of the band must have been aware

It’s not your fault that he turned out to be a piece of shit. I think it might be ok to still enjoy these albums on your own terms separate from the creator. What you felt at the time or there after is still legitimate

Yeah probably but I just really don’t want to,the reason I liked them was because they were relatable etc, that’s completely not the case now and I haven’t really missed listening to them as it’s not the same anymore

Why must the rest of the band been aware?

No, I don’t have to.

They may not have been aware but then it was one of their guitar techs who called him out and helped to get the ball rolling.

Whether they knew or not, they allowed that statement to be issued on behalf of the band so they seem pretty ok with his actions.

There is enough good art out there made my Actually Nice people to avoid listening to this and having to do battle with your conscience IMO

I don’t know that there is. I like a lot of music but only a handful I think are truly great, that I identify with to the core, brand new weren’t that for me personally but can understand why it is a dilemma for people, obviously losing a band pales into insignificance compared the wider issues, and it’s right to ditch them, don’t think that is easy though even if it is right

as if some people are trolling in here

I think you can separate the art from the artist, but that’s just my opinion and I certainly wouldn’t laugh at people who think so, or tell them how they should feel. That’s just being a dick

Not sure anyone laughed at that opinion, it’s not exactly a funny subject matter.

Yeah sorry who’s trolling here?

absolutely the same for me - one of my all time favourite bands, some of the best memories ever from their shows (saw them… like 9 times?) was so fucking excited about the brixton show - despite the venue - as i’d been in and out of hospital for months missing countless gigs and this was gonna be my big return and i loves science fiction and then… all this came out and that was it, i was done, haven’t listened to them since and don’t care to ever again. there’s plenty of other music out there. just stick the first 2 manchester orchestra albums on or something if you’re looking for something that has to be particularly similar.
